LEADERSHIP NEEDED FOR BARNES & NOBLE BOOKFAIR DECEMBER 12! This is a fun opportunity to manage a turn key event. GW earns money for books purchased and also earns visibility in the community as we wrap books and entertain customers.  Interested? Contact Kathy Stenzel at gwm...@gmail.com.

GW BAND BOOSTERS
MEETING Monday, September 29th at 7:30pm Please join us for the first meeting of the GWMS Band Boosters.  It's a great opportunity to find out more about the band program and this year's events. Mr. Seracino and Mr. Olney will also be in attendance. We meet in the GW band room (enter the building through door #6 in the back parking lot; the band room is on the 2nd floor at the top of the stairs). Hope to see you there!

TAKE YOUR PARENT TO SCHOOL DAY - OCTOBER 14
This is your opportunity to join your student for a portion of the school day to attend their classes. You can follow their schedule, see their teachers in action, and see who's in their classes! Maybe you can even attempt their locker combination.

Forms were sent home last week allowing you to sign up for one of a number of time slots. If you didn't get the form from your student, we've attached another copy below in English and Spanish.

VOLUNTEER SLOTS STILL AVAILABLE FOR ART ON THE AVENUE - OCTOBER 4

Does your student want to earn community service hours for National Junior Honor Society, AVID or another leadership development activity? Art on the Avenue is a fun way to receive community service credit or add to your child’s portfolio/resume.  Please help us get the word out about volunteering to students who might be interested in art or service projects. We still need students and adults to help with our Sand Drawing – Mandala project at Art on the Avenue. You can sign up here  or text the link to your child’s phone:

Contact Patrice Linehan (703-946-5431) or Angela Lutzker for more information, or text this sign up link to your child’s phone:http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0548ada922a31-artonthe

DON'T WAIT TO BUY YOUR CURIOUS GRAPE WINETASTING TICKETS! Here’s our chance to say goodbye to selling wrapping paper!  Instead, purchase your tickets to the wine tasting event for your child(ren)’s grade, have a night out with other GW parents, and raise $$ for GW.  The wine tasting is at the Curious Grape in Shirlington from 6-9PM, light appetizers will be served as well.  Tickets are $50 per person with $20 going right to our PTA.

WANT TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR OUR SCHOOL WITHOUT DONATING ANY OF YOUR OWN? It’s easy! Just start collecting Box Tops!
What are Box Tops? Box Tops are small coupons found on the packaging of many products that your family already uses, like General Mills cereals, Nature Valley granola snacks, Kleenex facial tissue, Progresso soups, Ziploc bags, and more. Check out www.BTFE.com for a list of participating products.

How does it work? Clip Box Tops from the packaging and place them in the Box Tops bin in the GWMS Main Office. Have a responsible kid? Send it in with them. HOW EASY IS THAT?

What happens then? Volunteers from the GWMS PTA count the Box Tops and send them in to Box Tops for Education. Each Box Top is worth 10¢. Last year, we collect over 6,000 Box Tops which raised over $600 to support the great work our teachers do.

Hate to cut things? Check out eBoxTops! eBoxTops, like physical Box Tops, are worth 10¢ each. However, instead of clipping these Box Tops and sending them into school, eBoxTops are awarded electronically at www.BTFE.com and are credited to GWMS.

So keep your eyes out ... your scissors sharp ... and help support our school!

ALEXANDRIA ACCESS IS COMING - WATCH YOUR HOME MAILBOX!
Letters will be mailed to parents regarding Alexandria Access by September 30th. It will be available for viewing on October 1st. This is the ACPS program that allows parents and students to view their grades 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Remember the teachers are expected to post their grades every two weeks. We encouraged both students and parents to monitor grades on a continual basis. More information can be found on the ACPS website, http://www.acps.k12.va.us/technology/aaa/

THE STUDENT TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE TEAM (STAT) has started up again this year! This year we will be meeting on Thursdays after school in room B104. STAT is a student-led initiative to offer assistance with school technology. Students will develop technology resources (training videos, help sheets), be technology resources for teachers, and will learn new technologies. This is a great opportunity for students who want to learn more about technology and want to be school leaders. We are looking for students that are comfortable around tablets and computers, are willing to learn more and are interested in helping others. Please spread the word and encourage students you know to join! Any questions? Contact James Draper (james....@acps.k12.va.us) or Kyle Dunbar (kyle....@acps.k12.va.us).

INFORMATION ON GOOGLE APPS FOR STUDENTS

Students at George Washington Middle School have the opportunity to use ACPS Google Apps for Education, an online tool that will provide access to ACPS maintained and monitored Google Docs and ACPS Google Apps Mail (user...@students.acps.k12.va.us).

ACPS takes security and privacy of student information very seriously. ACPS Google Apps is not accessible by anyone outside of the ACPS Google domain, so your student will be able to work and collaborate in a safe and secure online environment.

ACPS Google Apps will be a valuable instructional tool.

  1. Your student will have easy access to their documents, spreadsheets, and presentations within Google Docs. These files will be available at home, at school and on any web-enabled device.

  2. Teachers can use Google Docs to facilitate group projects. Since multiple students can be working on a file at one time, collaboration is easy and trackable. Students will also be able to collaborate on documents and presentations at different times and in different physical locations..

  3. Teachers will be able to give feedback to students directly in documents your student has shared with a teacher.

  4. You will be able to have your student log in to their ACPS Google account at home and show you what they are currently working on in class, as well as items that have been “turned in” and commented on by the teacher.

  5. Using these tools will give your students essential computer and collaboration skills that will be beneficial during their ACPS school career and in their collegiate and working world lives.

Please be assured your student’s students.apcs.k12.va.us account will work only within our secured ACPS Google environment. In other words, your student will only be able to use this account for messaging within ACPS Google Apps. It will not allow them to send or receive email outside of our “walled garden.” You will not be able to email your student at their students.acps.k12.va.us account, nor will they be able to email you.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Jim Draper, james....@acps.k12.va.us  or  Kyle Dunbar, kyle....@acps.k12.va.us Technology Integration Specialists at 703-706-4500 ext. 2104.
