HOPE TO SEE YOU TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE FIRST PTA MEETING
Please join us on Tuesday, 10/14 at 7pm in the library for the first meeting of the year. Topics to be covered include presentation of last year's audit and this year's budget; a report on the start of the school year from Mr. Mazur; and a presentation on PowerSchool and Blackboard from ACPS tech experts Kyle Dunbar and James Draper.

TAKE YOUR PARENT TO SCHOOL DAY IS TOMORROW!
Plan to arrive early to sign in and pick up a schedule in the library if you need; if your visit extends across your student's lunch, please join us in the library to relax with other parents and find out about upcoming events. Several classes will be using the library along with students conducting research for projects, so please enter and exit quietly! Parents of Team 6-4 should have received a separate letter about how they may observe their child's classes another day. If you have any questions, please contact your child's grade level principal's office. Also on Tuesday, construction will be in full swing for the new outdoor classroom. In addition to the workers, we expect visits by ACPS Administration, School Board and members of the press.

HAVE YOU GOTTEN OVER TO THE CURIOUS GRAPE?
Remember, for the entire month of October, when you shop or dine at the Curious Grape, a percentage of your bill will go to support our PTA, just let your server know you are there to support GW. There is still plenty of time to head over there for a meal, to meet a friend, or just do some shopping for wine, cheeses, meats and chocolates. We also still have one more wine tasting event coming up!  Last week we had an even larger crowd. Let’s make this last event the biggest yet! It’s a great time, with tasty food and wonderful company. The wine tasting is from 6-9 at the Curious Grape in Shirlington, right next to the post office. Click below, buy your tickets today and get a friend to join you as well!
October 16th:

INTERIM REPORTS, CONFERENCE REQUEST FORM AND OTHER IMPORTANT NOTICES MAILED HOME LAST WEEK
Please contact the main office at 703-706-4500 if you did not receive this very important mailing at home. Also in the packet: information on scheduling conferences, academic support resources, staff contact information, and an important notice reminding parents that Alexandria's emergency notification system has just changed - you must be resubscribed in order to receive emergency alerts. Additionally, a flyer to request interpretation services for Take Your Parents To School Day was included - all are attached.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS - REFLECTIONS ENTRIES ARE DUE OCTOBER 31!
Entry form was sent home last week and is also available on the PTA website at http://www.gwmspta.org ... new flyer is attached.

GW'S ACTIVITY AT ART ON THE AVENUE WAS A SUCCESS!
Thank you to all of the parent and student volunteers for helping and also thanks to the participants for contributing to our community art project. The mandalas were beautiful and everyone had a terrific time!

DRAMA CLASS SPONSORED PERFORMANCE LAST WEEK
On Wednesday October 8th, Mr. McDonough's Sixth Grade Theatre Classes hosted for the second year The Virginia Opera Company. Three gifted performers with the VOC Outreach Program sang selections from several different operas including Mozart's Don Giovanni and Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and a final duet from Rodger's and Hammerstein's Carousel. The children had an opportunity to ask the singers questions and have them provide some personal background. A very simple and thought provoking experience for kids and teachers was had by the two hundred that attended. See the attached picture!

ATTENTION ALL 8TH GRADERS!
You can be a part of the T.C. Williams Swim and Dive Team this year, and train with the best athletes in Alexandria. Coach O'Connor will host an information session on how to join up on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 3:15 pm in the GWMS gym. Even if you've never been a swimmer or diver before, you can join the Titans and help us rule the pool! For more information, please contact Coach O'Connor at seamus....@acps.k12.va.us or Mary Huber at wilkh...@gmail.com.

TCW SEEKING STEM MENTORS
We are looking for mentors in STEM-related fields (defined loosely) who want to work with a group of three 10th graders for 15 hours over the course of the year. The students need to find and solve a local problem with global implications. There is a Mentor Fair on October 17, or, anyone can contact me for more information. For more information, see the attached flyers.

Thanks!
