MLK Parade

Hi Kay and Members of the commision:

I just got off the phone with Marlene Crawford, President of the United Ebony Society Gwinnett County and expressed our desire to be part of the 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade on Monday, January 20, 2014.  The theme, “Strengthening our Community, Nation and World” is a reminder to us all of the importance of knowledge, empowerment, and wellness. 

The kick off  will be held at the gazebo at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse located at 185 Crogan Street in Lawrenceville, GA at 10:00am.  

The parade concludes at Moore Middle School which is located at 1221 Lawrenceville Highway (HWY 29) at the intersection of Johnson Road. 

She will have a table for us at Moore Middle School where we can display HRC materials, give aways, fliers.  I would appreciate it if someone can volunteer to man the table prior to the parade reaching the school and pass out information on the HRC.  

Kay if you could arrange to buy and donate water to the participants of the parade.  Ruby Neal (770-277-5123) will coordinate this from the United Ebony Society.

I have also indicated to them that some of us might have march in the parade.  Hence I need volunteers from the HRC and also if the PR committee can request some of its volunteers to participate that will be fantastic.  Come on out and make us proud!!!

I know we have the crazy green HRC caps that we can wear to brand ourselves.   Kay, could you see if you have some more of those to give the newer members.  Any hope of getting a HRC banner made to carry in the parade.

Love the theme and this is a perfect opportunity to not only support King's legacy, but also to "show and tell" the county community about the GHRC.  Count me in on marching; do we meet at the Gazebo?  Who can we contact about parking and the return trip after the march?

I also think this is a great opportunity to showcase our work: Redress, Oral History project and the Human Trafficking forums.  Who can we coordinate with to have one page handouts for each?

Donald – thanks for the email and update on the MLK collaboration. Sounds like a lot of fun!

 

I think it’s a great idea that we’ll have a table to promote the HRC. This is a good opportunity to promote the HRC’s upcoming activities as well as recruit some volunteers. We have a low supply of brochures so I suggest distributing copies of the booklet. Attached is a copy of the booklet of which I can make copies of (100) for distribution. We also have some pens and key chains left  over from last year’s Open House.  I don’t recommend purchasing water (sponsorship) to hand out at the parade. We have a very limited budget and $400 for supplies and materials. Purchasing water would wipe out the majority of the budget line item. Also it will be cold outside. We do have a large banner or sign that could be used in the parade. There is only 1 green HRC cap left and it’s late to order or print new ones. I can get these promotional materials ready for pick up anytime between today and Friday 1/17. Please let me know when and who will be picking them up.

 

Our Communications Dept. will also be sending out a video producer and photographer to cover the parade for TV Gwinnett and is doing this because of the HRC participating in the parade. Thanks for all you do! Have a great day!

You may be planning for this already, but in addition it would be great to have a brochure with the Redress complaint form(even though we need to improve upon it), a one page description and contact for the Oral History Project and a one page info sheet on the upcoming Human Trafficking forums.

Thanks for your email. Yes, I think a one pager on the Oral History Project and Human Trafficking Public Forums is a great idea! Actually, I spoke with Dan DeVore yesterday and told him I could help him with creating a one page info sheet to help promote with publicity. However, I think Tricia Sung should work on the Oral History Project info sheet since she knows more about that and is coordinating it. I can work on the HT info sheet this afternoon and email it for Dan DeVore’s approval etc.

I got this write up this morning just as I was leaving for the parade. Further all funding solicitations and money collected on behalf of the HRC is to be approved and overseen by the Gwinnett County Finance

 

Can you contact Tanikia Jackson on how to go about getting approval for this solicitation on behalf of HRC prior to doing it s that we do not flout any County guidelines.
