Hi,
The 'autoplay' option of the YouTube player in GWD seems to be broken - btw, I'm testing on a desktop.

Whether I set it to 'standard', 'preview' or 'intro', nothing happens.
The only way of getting the player to autoplay is to set extra-player-args="autoplay=1". But that's not what the 'preview' or 'intro' modes are supposed to do.

Can anyone help on this? I'm working on a YT custom masthead and I'd love to play the video muted in preview mode.

Many thanks,
Luca

Hi Luca,

'Autoplay' seems to be working fine in templates.  However, you may need to adjust the creative to make it work as you desire.
For example, there is a Tap area layer on top of the YT video so if you click on the banner, it will jump to a different page.
In this case, you need to double click into the layer and resize the Tap area so that it won't interfere with the video control.
Also, you may want to remove the end-preview > GoToPage event so that it won't jump to the different page after the preview.
If you still see the issue, please share your creative on this post so that we can take a look.

Thanks,
Rika

Hi Rika,
thanks for replying. I'm quite sure the Auto-play parameter does not work, regardless to what it is set.

I prepared 2 tests.
The first was made in GWD, starting from the template you suggested. The video player is set to autoplay="intro" and preview-duration="5". When viewed, the player does not autoplay.

The second test was made in a text editor, simply using the latest GWD youtube player component. Here the video player is set to autoplay="preview" and preview-duration="30". When viewed, the player does not autoplay either.

Has this setting being dropped??
Is there anywhere I can report a bug to one of the GWD components?

Many thanks,
Luca

Hi Luca,

The autoplay function seems to be working fine.  In the first link, I see the video autoplays for 5 seconds.
Please see our help for the different autoplay options.

Also, you need to use the Google Web Designer environment for the GWD Youtube component to work.
If you want to use Youtube parameters in your website, please refer to this link.

Thanks Rika,
we're getting somewhere... I use Chrome 55.0.2883.87 on a PC and the first link definetely does not autoplay for me. But, when trying on Firefox, it does.
Could I ask you to try on Chrome PC and see if it autoplays for you?!

Lastly, this link suggests that one should be able to use the GWD YouTube Player in any HTML5 creative: https://support.google.com/richmedia/answer/6330771?hl=en-GB
But I agree it seems not to be fully working.

Thanks,
Luca

Hi Luca,

I use Chrome 55.0.2883.87 on Windows 7 to view the link and it works.  I checked with another person, too.
Do you have any ad-blocker enabled for your browser?  Also, please see this link - https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/6138475?hl=en

Thanks,

Hi Rika,
thanks so much for your patience.
I think we got to the bottom of it... I confirm it seems to work on all browsers (IE, Edge, FF) apart from Chrome.

To be noted though, I'm on Win 10 64-bit.
I have now tried on 3 different PCs (all on Win 10 64-bit) with both Chrome 32-bit and 64-bit. I've disabled all extensions and plugins. But the video still does not autoplay. One of the Chrome browsers I tried was freshly installed.

Would you be able to do one last test on a Win 10 64-bit machine?

Many thanks,
Luca

Hi Luca,

Thanks for narrowing down the issue.  I now see the YouTube video in your first link is not autoplaying in Chrome on Windows10.
Can you please zip up your authoring files and send it to gwd-s...@google.com so that we can take a look?

Thanks again,
Rika

Hi Luca,

I created a simple banner and a banner using YouTube masthead in-page template to test the autoplay on Windows 10.
Both banners previewed fine in Chrome browser.  So if the problem persists, please send your author files to us so that we can take a look.

Thanks for using Google Web Designer,
Rika

Apologies Rika,
I got busy this week. I have just sent you 2 zipped source files (one made new in GWD and one custom HTML5 ad).

I can confirm they both do not autoplay for me on Chrome Win10, while they do on all other browsers.

Thanks for looking into this.

Hi Luca,

Thanks for sending the files.  I changed the autoplay option from "intro" to "preview" in your file and previewed it.
I see that the video does not play after clicking on the video preview.  Is this the autoplay issue that you were seeing?
I also noticed that the sound is not available.  I will log the issues on your behalf.

Thanks again for being patient and reporting the issue.

Hi Reka,
not really... the issue I have is the video preview does not autoplay. If I click the video preview, it then plays the video normally - sound included.

Thanks for logging the issues. Should you need any further info, do let me know.

Regards,
Luca

Hi Luca,

After testing on a couple of other machines, I was able to replicate the original bug you mentioned.  I will log the bug on your behalf.
Thanks for bringing up the issue.

Is there any explanation as to what's causing this issue? Its happening to me at the moment on Chrome and a fix would be nice.

Hi Greg,

This is a new autoplay policy in Chrome, you can read about it here.

You must mute the video for autoplay to work.

Hope it helps.
