It seems that the app doesn't currently support web fonts other than Google's. Correct? If so, any plan to support third party web fonts within the app itself?

Yes, this is a super big deal. I can't imagine one of our clients reacting well to a banner made with one of the build-in fonts, or even a Google web font. We need to be able to use a MUCH wider variety of fonts. Until we can, it's really a non-starter for us.

Thanks for the interest in GWD!

For our launch, we focused on integrating with open source Google Fonts. Going forward, we're looking at improving the variety of ways to include fonts in Web Designer projects.

For the time being, if you have a font installed on your system, you can simply type the font's name into the 'Font' field in the toolbar (it will not appear in the drop down). This is good enough to work out your design using the font that you expect to be available, however, there is no guarantee that the end user will have this font.

You can also use the CSS panel or Code view to set the font-family to any font that you have on your system.

Thanks Eric. That's pretty much what I presumed. It's a reasonable from Google's perspective, but for my purposes, until the app supports non-google fonts, It's not worth the investment of time/resources. I'll keep an eye on it though.

Also, for the record, I'm primarily interested in it as a web page design tool, not for banner ads.

You can also lay out the font in photoshop/illustrator and save as a transparent .png, then place it like an image.

Considering this is free, and GWD still allows the use of non-Google fonts through other methods, I don't see an issue with time/resource investment. I pay for a similar 3rd party program that doesn't allow outside fonts at all unless they are .png's, so GWD is a step above in this case.

I work at an advertising agency and can't use some hokey fonts in my project. I have to adhere to the client's brand standards. If you want to make this a proper tool for professionals, let me use any font I want. Thanks.

We definitely hear you and it's something we've been thinking about as well. To your needs, is Eric's previous comment helpful to you, would you be able to use the desktop fonts this way:

For the time being, if you have a font installed on your system, you can simply type the font's name into the 'Font' field in the toolbar (it will not appear in the drop down). This is good enough to work out your design using the font that you expect to be available

Is there any update to that issue? Are there any plans to make it possible to use own fonts & include them in the uploaded creative?

The App does not seem to support the use of a font that is outside of Web Fonts or Google fonts. There is no option to choose font from the font menu, and every time I try to use this html snippet (with the fonts in the same root folder as the html file)

@font-face {
font-family: 'Whitney-Semibold';
src: url("Whitney-Semibold.eot");
src: url("Whitney-Semibold.eot?#iefix") format("embedded-opentype");
src: url("Whitney-Semibold.woff") format('woff');
}

Yes the fonts are in .eot and .woff formarts. The html 5 can't be viewed correctly in the App, it just dissapears.

So my question is the same.. will it support third party fonts for the use of dynamic content? Is there any documentation that can help me implement third party fonts? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

i was wondering the same about using web fonts other than Googles.
This is a must have feature if you want GWD to be considered a professional and competitive program.

I build banner ads and every client has their own special font they want to use. GWD is a great program but it really hurts it i think to not have this feature especially for professional needs.
I think the best solution for now is to use .png's . that is the only way i see getting the font you need across all browsers.

Heres to hoping it gets added soon!

Actually you can use the fonts, but I've only got the .otf file, so I'm using that now in my testing using the code I outlined before.

However, not sure what it will look like once it goes live.

Google Web Developer should just make that part more intuitive for designers, thats all!

Hi!

Time is passing... May we expect some progression about the issue? Are there any workarounds? Will Google ever plan to implement this feature?

Creating dynamic ads without the ability to use branded fonts is simply ridiculous. Please listen to us, your users, and give at least some feedback.

Thanks,
Peter

Have to agree with everybody else here - if you want this to be used professionally, you have to let the clients use their fonts and allow us to embed them in the html (like most HTML editors allow now days). Using .pngs is okay sometimes, but when the banner is already image heavy and you have a "weight" limit you have to be under, those .pngs can add up pretty quick.

Has anyone been successful using fonts licensed from typekit.com or typography.com in GWD?

This is ridiculous...

We cannot use tons of pngs. We need custom fonts. This is basic.

Also throwing my voice into the ring here, for many of our larger clients this is a dealbreaker. Has any headway been made on this at all?

Hi All,

I'm the Program Manager on the Google Web Designer team and also work on the Google Fonts team and I'm HUGE font nerd. Yes, we've made some progress here and we're working with the Google Fonts team to optimize and make the fonts available to our ad products. As it turns out font licensing is pretty complicated and working closely with a partner, it still took 6+ months to finalize an agreement! We're past that phase now and working on resourcing and assigning a dev on the fonts side to implement. Font serving, latency and ads have to play very well together, so before we can make the fonts avail in Google Web Designer (and other ads products), we need to make sure that they work as well as the Google Fonts API via the google.com/fonts site (shameless plug).

Additionally we also know that you want to be able to upload any font and use it, not just licensed fonts, but also custom commissioned fonts (i.e. "Super Awesome Company Sans"), so that's something we have our eye on as well. Believe me, we hear you and if I could make this move any faster, I absolutely would (and plan to :-)

Thanks again for your patience and I'll update as soon as I can!

thx
jaz

Assume absolutely no updates to this issue? it's a big issue for me today as my client wants to change to a custom font whilst the rest of the build is complete.

The only work around that I have been able to find, is to upload the fonts as part of the assets in DoubleClick Studio, and then link them in the code portion of google web designer and in the css for every text block. You can't see the fonts in GWD so it is a bit harder to layout, but when you preview it on a browser, they do show up. So far it has worked, but I am not sure if their "weight" gets added to the total weight of the banner, or if it is just referenced, but my client doesn't care either way, all they want their font used...so we do it.

If you don't use DoubleClick Studio, is there another way to host the fonts somewhere and then just call to them?

Some users have suggested this technique:
  1. Put font files in 'assets' folder
  2. Specify like this in CSS:
    @font-face {
        font-family: myFont;
        src: url("assets/myfont.ttf");
    }
  3. More detail: https://storage.googleapis.com/mps-storage/pigozzop/animatedgifs/fontGWD.gif

Thanks, will give it a go.

It would be nice to be able to do this through the "more fonts" menu for ease, so please take that as a feature request. :)

Not really. With this "trick" I managed to use only one custom font in GWD, but had no idea how to publish it with the font embedded or if it's possible at all... so back to the beginning.

I cant believe that there's still no update or proper solution for this after 4 years of "we're working on it"...
