Like the title says, I think that Google should allow us to import HTML, CSS and JS files that were created outside of Google Web Designer.

I say this because I use to work on notepad++ for a lack of money to put into a full software and my language knowledge was enough to allow me to still work. With Google creating Web Designer, it allows me to have a free software that could help me do more complexe things. That said, even though it would be as simple as copy/paste, google should allow us to just import for more ease.

What do you think?

Hi,

We disabled this for now.  If we are going to allow opening any valid file then we want to make sure that once we bring it in everything is going to work properly.

At the time we shipped the beta we had two options:

1.  Disable opening files created elsewhere
2.  Allow it but have many files not work as well as they should in the tool.

We chose to disable it for now. When we do allow this it needs to be a good experience.

Thanks,

Sean

Also note that only HTML files cannot be opened if not created by GWD. But you can open any JS and CSS files in Web Designer.

Try Komodo, it's free and WAY better than notepad.

Workaround: Add this meta code into the head of your existing documents. This will allow GWD to open it ;)

<meta name="generator" content="Google Web Designer 1.0.0.924">

Note that although GWD will open the file if you add this meta tag, some functionality will not work as expected. That is why we disabled opening arbitrary HTML files for now.

As I've since discovered and commented on through G+. That's the beauty of beta; it means time to tinker ;) You have a great product in GWD, and I look forward to seeing it progress!

I love Notepad++ when I am using a Windows® machine!

 I think a lot of people probably have No Idea what all it can do. Also it is the best  all around, just as a text editor that I've seen for Windows™ as well, and I've probably tried almost all over the  years.
 I use VIM cream, Gedit, and Geany mostly on Linux, although Leafpad is a nice little lightweight editor..
