When i try lunching google web-designer on fedora 23, it opens blank, i have tried the workarounds for proxy settings ( i don't use a proxy though), changing video drivers and deleting the .local file anytime i did those steps but none of them helped, it would complain that it couldn't find " opera " which was odd, but anyway i installed opera and it still won't load, here is the log:

Hi sarlapie,

Have you installed the latest version of the Google Web Designer?  You don't have to edit the proxy setting if you don't use it.
Please uninstall the Google Web Designer, remove it from /.local/share and try installing it again.

Thanks,
Rika

I have tried that with nothing new happening, still stuck at a white page.

It may be that it does not correctly ask for dependencies on installation and i am missing a dependency on it, it works fine on my fedora 23 on my desktop, however my laptop not at all. I tried it on a fedora 23 virtual machine and it outright complained of missing libraries, but the RPM itself does not seem to ask for the needed dependencies nor do i know what they ere.

Hi sarlapa,

The only Linux known installation issue is that if you have the shell version 1.1.7 installed and try to update to 1.2.5, you may get error that
Google signing key is missing error.   Does the error you get look like this?

You have enabled checking of packages via GPG keys.  You need to download
the keys for packages you wish to install and install them.
You can do that by running the command:
    rpm --import public.gpg.key

If this is the case, please follow these instructions to install the key and then run the update command for google-webdesigner.

Thanks,
Rika

I am having the same issue with Fedora 23. I just downloaded the latest version of google web-designer and all I get is the white screen of death. I used yumex and dnf to install the rpm package download. With dnf I did get the following error.

Running transaction
Installing : google-webdesigner-1.2.5.0-1.x86_64 1/1
touch: cannot touch ‘/root/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list’: No such file or directory
/bin/xdg-mime: line 827: /root/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list.new: No such file or directory
Warning in file "/usr/share/applications/gnumeric.desktop": usage of MIME type "zz-application/zz-winassoc-xls" is discouraged ("zz-application/zz-winassoc-xls" should be replaced with "application/vnd.ms-excel")
Redirecting to /bin/systemctl start atd.service
Verifying : google-webdesigner-1.2.5.0-1.x86_64 1/1

Installed:
google-webdesigner.x86_64 1.2.5.0-1

Complete!

But it does not run.

OK.  So both of you are seeing the white screen and cannot start GWD although you are not using proxy server, correct?
Then, can you send us the verbose error logging file to diagnose the issue?
Please see the instruction on how to get the log from the link below:

Hi Sara and Tim,

It looks like the HTTP request is blocked somehow.  Can you check the following and get back to us?

- Is there any ad blocking software running on your machine?
- Is there any port blocker set up?
- Does Chrome work correctly on your systems?
- What desktop environment are you running? (KDE, Gnome, Unity, e.t.c.)?

Thanks,
Rika

There is no ad blocking software, there is firewall (firewalld), i disabled it and it didn't change anything, just disabled selinux to see if that would change anything, and nothing either! Chrome works perfectly, i am able to load the xml that google web designer fails to load in chrome perfectly, chromium and firefox also works fine.
I am using Gnome 3.18.2 which is the default for fedora 23.

Thanks for the responses.  We are still investigating.  Can you try downloading the CEF test client to see if it works properly?-  https://cefbuilds.com/

it complained that it was missing a library:

./cefclient: error while loading shared libraries: libgtkglext-x11-1.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

i had to install gtkglext-libs and gtkglext-devel which also includes quite a few dependencies. CEF Worked fine after, however google web designer refuses to work, i copy pasted the google-webdesigner folder from one that was working and its working now, it still throws out errors on log that it can't connect anywhere though.

Really should have a offline package and also document what dependencies it really needs to run

Just fyi, the gtkglext- file is only CEF dependent, not GWD.

So you have copied  the google-webdesigner folder from your desktop (which you were successfully installed and launched GWD)
to your laptop (which you are having a trouble launching GWD)?  Is this the folder under /usr/local/google/home/<your user name>/.local/share/?
Is GWD working for you on your laptop now?

> it still throws out errors on log that it can't connect anywhere though.

What error are you seeing?  Do you mind sharing the error message?

Thanks,
Rika

Can you also try removing the cache (data and log) inside the folder and restarting the machine.  Thanks.

Hello and sorry for late reply!

When i copy pasted it from another computer it opens, but it doesn't work properly, i am not able to select templates nor create an empty file, it opens but doesn't actually work properly. The Log file still shows that it is not able to connect in that case.

And, next i deleted cache and logs as you asked and rebooted, still blank screen.

Hi,

I just shared the file with you in a separate email.
Please try launching the GWD after saving the file under /.local/share.

Thanks,

Hello!

This one works even less than the one i had copied, this one just shows a white window like usual, with the usual:

from browser.log
and

Hi Sara,

Can you try this?

  1. run the cefclient test app (do you still have it?  if not, https://cefbuilds.com and under Branch 2526 Download the Test App for her platform and unzip it)
   2. run cefclient
   3. select the "tests" menu and select "Other Tests"
   4. Click on the "CefURLRequest" link
   5. In the page that appears enter "
   https://www.gstatic.com/ninja/config/shell_config.xml" and press the
   "Execute CEFUrlREquest" button.
   6. Does the XML appear in the text area?

Thanks,
Rika

Hello!

I just used the new file you sent me and it works fine, the browser.log keeps complaining of no connection though, but i do doubt that it is a connection issue because i just tried it on a ubuntu virtual machine on the same computer and it ran fine, it just doesn't run on fedora 23 on my laptop it seems . Is there anyway to disable GPU acceleration in google-webdesigner to see if it may be a bug with the nvidia drivers?

So the CEF client test worked for both of you.
You might have done this already but can you try uninstall/install in the following manner?

1) Uninstall GWD
2) Remove the cache and log folders under  ~/.local/share/google-web-designer/data/ if they aren't removed automatically
3) Reboot the computer
4) Grab rpm from google.com/webdesigner with the laptop connected to the internet
5) Install
6) Launch
If it doesn't appear, reboot and launch it again

Thanks!

I've relayed your information to dev.  Since we cannot reproduce the your issue here there is not much we can do.  Sorry about that.

It seems to be related to the gnome DE. I am using Ubuntu gnome and am seeing the same issues. There is another ubuntu forum detailing the same issues with gnome DE.

To be clear, GWD is still giving the white screen of death on ubuntu gnome 16.04

We just released a new Google Web Designer version (1.6.0.0429, shell: 1.3.5) for 64 bit Linux.  Please give it a try and let us know if the white screen issue on launch is resolved.

Thank you
