I'm going to ignore itty bitty details for the moment and look at
large scale ideas to start with. Especially if we plan to have to
rewrite a lot of this from the ground up even if we're using the same
essential ideas.
Chapter One:
-There is an emphasis on new Domain building. That's all well and
good, but do we want to mention internet options along with that? Not
everybody is on board with starting a new Domain in their area or is
looking to play LARP. How LARP-centered are we intending to be?
-How much of a charity emphasis do we want to have? It's mentioned
very little in chapter one. Social activities get more mention than
charity.
-Code of Conduct. Maybe this is just from being on the ST side of the
house where making the Addenda easier to deal with and shorter is all
the rage, but I think we can break this down to more useful chunks and
make it less subjective and more useful.
-Global Chronicle. I think this section is way too big and we could
benefit from having one section be solely focused on the player/ST
side of the club rather than the member/Coord side of the club.
-I do like the living document concept.
Chapter Two:
-I agree with Chris, chapters are outdated and divisive, especially if
we're going to provide for looser rules on opting to play online
instead.
-We could lose a lot of text here as well if we consolidated some
things down with a better handbook organizational structure.
Chapter Three:
I couldn't get this section to come up.
Chapter Four:
-Are we going to do some kind of educational set up? Are we going to
do Ordeals or something like that?
-Prestige system- do we expect to change very much here other than
filing off the identifying features and slapping new names on them? I
kind of like the idea of the higher level MCs being things that
require x years as an ST, y years as a Coord, z years at local level,
d years at upper level- some sort of non-prestige related but
non-subjective measure of what a person's contributed that reflects
their experience gained. I think when you started to add up the years
on the club, you would up with several MC 14s who got there by doing
little more than collecting cans for ten years compared to the people
who took jobs, got wholly involved and did their 14 in a relatively
shorter time period. The latter have more influence on the club, but
the former got the same benefits for less overall contribution. I
think that may have been one of the things that contributed to the
negative cultural changes in the past few years in MES.
-Trustee. Get rid of it, it serves no purpose except to divide
people. There are better ways of rewarding people who truly stand
out.
-Beware any kind of policy of prestige budgeting like is currently
happening in MES.
-Some of this prestige procedural stuff would be eliminated or changed
with the use of a consolidated coordinator database.
Chapter Five:
-Referenda at the National level- would that go in here, or in the
Constitutional equivalent?
-How do we feel about ranked voting?
Chapter Six:
-The last MH group was, at one point well before the thing was
completed, working on a flow chart style conflict resolution process
that included something of a "checklist" along the way to help
officers make sure that the process is handled appropriately (covering
their asses as well as their members'). I really liked that style of
handling things. I was asked to take a draft that was presented by
one of the MH committee members (not Chris) and re-lawyer it to make
it work better. I've attached the section of that I contributed to.
My work is in purple there.
-Speaking of flow chart and check list style incident management,
having that shorthanded as some kind of form an officer can print and
take with them to run a mediation would be great. That gets back into
the idea of a consolidated coordinator database as well because that
information can be entered in fairly easy, depending on how serious we
want to get about tracking documentation.
Chapter Seven:
-Communications. Another section that I think we could make less
bulky and more effective. One thing that's been going on with MES
lately that getting a lot of negative attention is people who are
trying to use this section and perpetual responsibilities to do spin
control and rumor control. We need to be careful to make sure that
people are allowed to be people when it comes to their private
communications (within reason; no you can't threaten people, but yes,
you can vent to your friends when you're hurting).
-Assistant accounts being accessible by the primary officer needs to
be mandatory.
That's a quick and dirty once over. I think maybe even deciding if we
want to use this same chapter format might be a good plan. I think we
could probably do better breaking the information down differently so
that it's not so repetitive might be a good plan, both for ease of use
and to separate it out from the original edition/US materials.
