Hey guys,

It's time (past time, actually. Blame birthday parties and WoW holidays...) to start the discussion on the first section of the member handbook. That section is as follows:

Chapter 1: The Basics

1. What is the GWB? Existential questions galore!

Buser wrote about a page on this that I'll post in a few minutes.

2. What am I entitled to as a member?

This section is for selling what a member can expect from the GWB. It should include things like how one receives compensation for effort given, how a member can expect to be treated (in official processes and every day), and one's ability to access games and such. So, this is where we decide if, absent a disciplinary action, a member is entitled to take part in any game or if an ST can limit the cast of characters if he wishes.

3. What is expected of me as a member?

This section is for the code of conduct and any other expectations (updated sheets, xp logs, full cooperation with investigations, any signature-block expectations on official correspondence, etc) the club has of its members. I'll also post my draft Code in a few minutes.

I think it's important to list these things up front and all in the same place, because the more simply and obviously they are presented the more honest a footing the club starts out at, and the harder it is to claim (and be right in doing so) that someone just didn't know, either on the side of someone failing to live up to the Code, or someone infringing on member rights.

So, what do you guys think for these sections?

I like what I am reading. And I do have a suggestion when we get to the specifics of the CoC and as such will hold action until that is posted, as to not clutter this feed.

1. The GWB is a gaming organization with members from around the world, facilitating a shared universe of gameplay.

2. A member is entitled to the ability to play in any game in the GWB they can attend, not withstanding cases where prior approval might be required (proxies, any other situations, etc.) as well as a safe, mature environment in which to play. Additional compensation in the form of XP character benefits are available in return for service to the organization.

3. A member is expected to conduct themselves like a mature, responsible adult. Cheating in game and abusing others is something that children do and it's something that's not welcome in GWB.

Just my 2 cents.

> 2. What am I entitled to as a member?

As a starting point:

Generally;
* The right to be treated with dignity and respect

Re: disciplinary procedures
* The right to be treated with dignity and respect
* The right to know the accusations against you
* The right to know who is your accuser
* The right to present a defence

I'll address the Code in the other thread.

That all sounds fine to me. I might add that you can expect everyone else to follow the Code of Conduct as well, and that if they don't you should contact a coordinator about it, but I totally agree with this as well.

I think I'm going to end up saying this a lot throughout these discussions, so best to consider me the devil's advocate on some things but...we all seem to want simplicity, but a lot of the *basic* stuff seems to concentrate on punitive measures right off the bat.

Again, I'm going to make the MMO comparison; if you're trying to get your friends to try this new game you're playing, do you describe it as, "Yeah, you make your own character, and adventure, and battle, and fill out complaint forms against players who harass you, oh! and there's also a procedure you can follow when you're the one accused of harassment!"

Just something to consider, as I'm trying to look at this handbook from the point of view of someone we'd like to recruit. Growth is everything and we have to consider what a new player is looking at. Just my 2 cents.

I imagine that as the discussion progresses we will move away from
behaviour and enforcement provisions to the positive stuff that people
want to know about. It's important we capture both.
