[MIKE CURTIS]

Recently purchased a Falcone Turismo frame number FAL 49. I am told it is a 1956 model. Can anyone here validate this based on the number? Is there a source for an “official” written statement to the fact. Thanks

If you are in the UK, then the Moto Guzzi Club GB will provide a dating certificate that is accepted by the DVLA for registration purposes.

Hei Mike, 

Just from my experience when i was considering buying a Falcone with "FA" frame prefix like yours.... From what i learned, it means its a "Civilized" Police/Carabinieri/Army bike.  Those bikes seemingly had 3 letters + numbers like yours, with the first two letters always being FA. The regular civilian frames had only F or FS (Falcone Sport) followed by five numbers. 

For these reasons, the "FA" frame numbers are harder to date, even by paying to the official Piaggio dating service, according to this Guzzi mechanic i met.

That's an interesting thought.  I have a 250 Airone in the UK with the prefix of MAI to both the frame and engine numbers, it is registered as a 1954 model. I came across another one on Facebook that had almost identical numbers. The Dutch Guzzi Club website has a list of frame numbers to dates produced and has the Airone MAI as date unknown.

What I don't see is how they would have modified the frame and engine numbers when they were decommisioned from the forces?

They didnt modify the frame numbers after decommission from service, it remained the same.

My understanding is that whenever the second letter is an "A" it means it is "Pubblica Amministrazione", i.e. a bike supplied to a governmental agency.

they were supplied in contractual purchase batches, so it's usually a the three letter code + two digit numbers,  as opposed to civilian series which had 1-2 letters and 5 digit number.
