After sitting all winter in an unheated garage, my 84 year old

Such a good running machine. Maybe you and others should consider
riding out here and back this summer.

Or trucking/trailering and riding the Motomelee June 21-23 in what will
probably be blistering hot weather.

Am I going insane? I have found a willing buyer for my overhauled and well-sorted Astore/Falcone and that will enable me to muster the funds and make space for a '37 500S and a '47 Airone that have become available for purchase. I have grown quite attached to the Astore/Falcone and it has proven itself to be a reliable and entertaining ride. I know that parts for the Airone are readily available, but I expect that parts for the 500S might be more of a challenge. It is a rigid/girder chassis with an exhaust over inlet cast iron motor. The condition of the mechanicals are unknown, as neither bike has been started or ridden in many years, but the cosmetics are quite presentable and both bikes appear to be complete. Apart from some updated levers and switches, and a questionable foot operated gear change lever on the 500S, both bikes seem to be more or less original and well-preserved.

One part of me says ride the wheels off the Astore/Falcone and the other part looks forward to returning a couple more Guzzi singles to the world of the living, then riding the wheels off of them.

Does anyone have any experience with the 500S?

Regards, Alan in Vancouver

I Alan,,,,,Does it look like this one ? It looks really cool but it might not be as much fun to ride being a little down on power,,no ? It surely would be something new to talk about that's for sure .......good luck with your decision.

Very Cool!

I’d say as long as you have a bike to ride “everyday” buy whatever stirs up your passion.

To answer the first question.........Yes. Now, the S/GTS is lower
powered by some 10 Hp. I like it better because of the valve gear
action. All the parts are available. The only real thing you have to
watch out for is to determine how much meat there is on the intake valve
face. Once that gets too thin, there is no longer any valve seat and
maybe no way to repair it. Then a new head will be needed. It's
probably good for 35-45 mph.

The person with experience is Spencer Graves who has posted in the last
few days. He will probably contact you.

It is quite a bit more "modern" than the one pictured. I am not too worried about being down on power. The Astore/Falcone replaced my 850 LeMans, so I went from 71 hp to 18 hp. Going from 18hp to 14 hp will not be nearly as dramatic. I will post some photos after The paperwork is sorted and I take delivery.

I thought you fitted a crowned piston to the Astore as well as a Falcone
cam? If so, the Astore is 23 HP. The S is 13.5 hp. An "S" should be
good for back roads but is probably illegal for freeways - and dangerous.

>I have a 1939 GTS which is the same as the S except with sprung
rear end. I acquired and rode it in Ethiopia for a couple of years
before bringing it to the U.S. in 1970. It was absolutely reliable on
some miserable road conditions with no air cleaner. With Jerry's help
I restored it in 2011 in time for the Guzzi 90th anniversary celebration
in Birmingham, Al. As I posted earlier this week, it started first kick
this week after sitting all winter in an unheated garage. The best I
have gotten is 49 MPH on a flat paved road. I am currently working
on another one with sidecar. Tim Smith also has a GTS and I am sure
there are a few others in the U.S. Not a speed demon, but a very
unusual and fun bike to ride. Hope you get it and enjoy it.

Hello Jerry
I guess I already knew the answer to the first question. I expect that I will be going through the motors and gearboxes before attempting to start them up. I will look carefully at the valve seats, but I would have thought that a badly worn intake valve seat would require a new cylinder rather than a new head. All of the F head engines I have ever seen have one valve in the head and one valve in the cylinder block.

The Astore/Falcone has a flat top piston and cruises effortlessly at 60 mph. It does slow down a bit on long uphill grades. The 500S will be used exclusively on back roads and short rides around the city. I have a Morini 500 for longer rides that involve freeways and/or keeping up with a group.

Iron cylinders are all the same, except the S cylinder only has three 3
head bolts. So only three fins are left out.. The head contains both
valves. If the engine runs, it will be OK. But don't do more than lap
the intake valve since there is only about 1/4" thickness there from the
valve to the outside. Well, you'll see what I mean when you open it
up. It isn't really an F head. More like an L head with the combustion
chamber off to the side, valve on bottom, spark plug opposite. The
exhaust valve is over left of that in the center.

The valves are interesting. They don't have keepers like you are used
to. Just a vertical slot in the stem and a wedge keeper. I like the
way the pushrods are external. Interesting to see it running. Be sure
to keep the exhaust valve rocker grease cup filled and give it a twist
now and again.

I believe I have some workshop info if you want it. The stuff I have is
for a 3-speed transmission, not the 4-speed. But the rest of the motor
is about the same. I also have gaskets for that head if you need them
(and I can find them).

Hello Spencer,
Thanks for the info. The 500S is considerably lighter than the GT so it should be a real road burner. Maybe good for 50 mph on the flat. I have recently retired, so I have nowhere top go and i am not in a hurry to get there.

Thanks Spencer.
Jerry, Patrick and Antonio were also all very helpful to me when I was returning my Astore/Falcone to service. Without their help the learning curve would have been much steeper.
