Hi all,

I need to replace the connecting rod bearing on a Galletto. For those who don't believe that Italians can build reliable engines: see the photos: this engine was still running! The play could be measured with a measuring tape :). Unfortunately, the shaft on the crank cheek is no longer in good condition and will need to be ground by an engine reconditioning company.

Therefore, I would like to disassemble the crankshaft so that this shaft can be removed and ground, and then machine a new plain bearing. The workshop manual does not describe how to disassemble the crankshaft. Or at least, I cannot find it. Based on the exploded view in the parts guide and my common sense, it seems to me that the on the opposite side of the crankcase, holding the pignon, needs to be loosened, the gear needs to be pulled off, and then the shaft can be pulled right out. See also Figure 14 from the manual. That puller that I don't have is the next challenge, but the first question is that nut: before I strip everything, a poll: is this left-hand or right-hand thread? Tips, tricks, and experiences are more than welcome!

Thanks for sharing your wisdom, BR Diederik

I think I remember it is a left hand thread (available from Guzzi Retro if you destroy it whilst removing as I did). Guzzi Retro also have most other parts.

I don't know if the guzzi pinion extractor would have worked on my 192AE but there was no way I could get the pinion off the shaft using a range of standard extractors without destroying it. Second hand hand pinions are available from Bebricambi in italy. Your are left with more primary drive whine as the pinion and clutch basket gears are no longer a matched pair (assuming they were originally) but mine seems to work OK otherwise.

Good luck.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the tips. I was already looking for a replacement engine, as having the crankshaft reworked willen set me back for a 250 euros here. You never know though what problem you will buy yourself into buying and engine you haven't heard running.

Your tips willen help me dismantling the engine and to be honest, the fact you wrecked your pignon makes it a bit of a challenge to me :).
