Thought I'd sent this, but maybe not...if it's a duplicate, appologies.

My 56' Airone developed a weak spark on the recent moto giro USA, points, plug and plug wire seem fine.  Do I get at the condenser by pulling the points backing plate or by removing the 4 screws and the whole cover?  It's a MCR4E 15º.

Thanks,
Mike Peavey

Remove the 4 screws but do also disconnect the wire to the points and when you do this you also unhook the wire coming from the condenser.
Just wiggle the whole assemble off.
You might as well remove the points as they will either need a good clean or be replaced.
Hope this helps.
Gordon

Hi Mike,

Hope you are doing and recovering well.

In my experience a bad condenser will usually give you a huge spark when testing with a spark plug.

Oil seems to be the number one issue with transient mag problems. Make sure things are clean and have good grounds.

Hi Gordon and Rick,
Finally had a few minutes in the shop today to suss out the Airone mag issue… turned out to be pretty straight forward, the wire from the condenser to the points had broken at the terminal, it was still inserted in the collar, so at first glance it looked fine, but when I loosened the nut, only the terminal came away.   I'm guessing that was the reason for the initial intermittent/poor spark and then finally no spark, an easy fix.  I've got a set of points and a condenser coming from Guzzino, so as long as it's all apart, I'll just replace them.

And yes Rick, thank you very much,  the recovery has gone remarkably well, been back flying for about two weeks and took a one month anniversary ride last Sunday, who would  have guessed?  I've got about 90% of the side to side mobility back and I'm told that should improve to 95% or better when all is said and done, the wonders of modern medicine.

Best,
Mike

Funny that.  I had a dry joint where the wire to the points was soldered to the condenser so whilst I was in there I changed it.
Easy fix, as you said.
Maybe they fail every 50 years or so ;-)
