I believe I am finally over the hump on my GTV saga. It’s been a long drawn out saga.
Yesterday competing with Mother’s Day and yardwork I found a bit of time to roll The GTV out and fire it up. In the first time since I’ve had it I got it started easily with NO CHOKE. Just tickling. I let it warm up a bit and ran it to the gas station to fill
it up. Then I took it for about 2 miles on some neighborhood streets. She ran really well, no stalling but the lever friction dampers do not cope well at all with speed bumps! LOL!
Got her home and fiddled with the idle speed a little. The shifter is stiff but hopefully will free up with a few miles.
Setting my sights on the Rigid Ride, I believe next month. A nice local ride starting at the Alpine Inn in Portola Valley and heading out to the coast. Then back for lunch before parting ways. I usually ride my Rocket Gold Star but the GTV is much more “rigid”.

Hi Jerry,
The spitting back seemed to just kind of go away. Yeah, I know, but hey, I’ll take it. Seems like a lot of problems I was having went away after I replaced the flywheel. Not sure why that would have a real big impact since all it is, is just a weight. I guess with it oscillating back and forth a bit maybe it was affecting the smoothness of the idle speed. I need to recheck the timing. I think it’s got too much advance which also means it might not have as much retard as it should. Either way it is starting very easy. Idle still hangs up a bit like it’s lean but I’m sure the carb is well worn and is probably sucking air around the slide. I just need to do short hops on it and play with it until I’m confident I’ve worked out the bugs.

Try velocity stacks (longer ones) and raising the needles a notch.

You can still go down a step on the mains. The needles control a wide range but once they reach a certain height the main jets control more and more.
The longer venture provided by a velocity stack, or a longer one can really help mixing the air and fuel and increasing the intake speed. People always concern themselves with flowing ports, port size and shape but often overlook the airflow as it enters the
bell mouth.
That is one thing I did on my GTV. I pulled off the air filter and went to a velocity stack.

I had a ISDT Jawa that I fitted a Bing to. I was having trouble with it right off idle so a friend mentioned filing a notch on the front side of the slide, about
1/8” wide and 1/8” high. The thinking is that it allows air through sooner at the very bottom of the venturi which is where the needle jet and idle passage are. This extra flow would result in more negative pressure there to help pull more fuel through. It
helped but I got an offer for the bike before I really had it completely sorted. The new owner ended up with a Mikuni but I wanted a Bing because that’s what the factory teams were running. Sometimes authenticity is a curse! LOL.
I also agree with Andrew. There is, in my experience a lot more overlap in jetting than the books and manuals would have you believe.

Until they go change the fuel formulas again! Hahaha!

Ah....the black art of carb tuning. It takes a lot of experimenting, but it is worth it when you get it right.
