After installing my rear rack a few weeks ago I was casting around for a bag that would look appropriate.  I stopped at a saddleshop to discuss the possibility of a custom made bag $$$.   I looked for a few weeks for a ready made bag that wouldn't break the bank that had close enough dimensions to look good on the rack.   I settled on large toiletry bag made by Elizo that was a reasonable price.  A piece of masonite for the base and I think it looks pretty good.  It probably saved me well over $500 for the custom made unit.

Looks nice. I like that it has a slightly distressed look. Not so much that it looks beat up but enough that it doesn't look brand new. I would've opted for a black it there was an option. Just to match the seat.

Quite retro and authentic looking.

Did you consider the wicker look? :-)

HA!  My attachment method is quite adequate.  I think it will hold up to 200 mph no problem.

I don't think so. True portable luggage from that original era would
almost certainly be limited to natural brown leather. I think your
version is quite perfect as is.

The leather looks good. Wicker to me says more Britannia. Make sure you treat the leather regularly, especially if you ride the bike.

Personally, I don't understand the wicker basket thing so popular in the UK. when these bikes were in everyday use, leather was without doubt, the material most likely used for tools or whatever. Wicker isn't weatherproof for a start. The only pictures I've ever seen where it's used is despatch riders in the 14-18 war. Even then, they often have the basket strapped to their back (Real heroes). In the '20s and 30s, there were millions of WD surplus, respirator haversacks and small packs to fit the bill for the less well-off rider🙂

Not a UK specific thing wicker. There was also of course the wicker sidecar.
Don't forget that France was the world's premier motorcycle maker until after WW1.
Wicker is contrary to leather, extremely weather proof. And it can be lined.

When I think of wicker and motorcycling I think back to a machine I saw in one of my old books. Three wheeler, laid out like a modern CanAm but ahead of the front axle was a wicker chair for the wife. Looked kind of scary to me but of course if you were looking to finish the wife off it could have been very convienent. LOL!

Yes, they were surprisingly common among veteran makers. You see a few on the veteran Brighton runs.  (Cars and bikes have different runs).

They were called ‘forecars’ as opposed to ‘sidecars’. Agreed I wouldn’t want to be a passenger! Too near the accident.
