Is anyone here running new EXPOSED stainless valves in cast iron guides, and they had any issues with seizing? My problems stem from the experts fitting bronze guides because stainless and iron don't go together. However, its plain that the iron cylinder head does not expand nearly as much as the guide which then grabs the valve. This is with 3thou clearance. I would be interested to hear anyone else experience. This is a 1935 GTV with exposed valve gear. Thanks for any input.

Yes, I run 5/16" stem chrome plated stainless valves in cast iron guides.  No issues.  Rick Yamane does also although he may not know it.  I did two other heads this way also and there have been no issues.  If you run bronze guides you have to oil them.  Never oil cast iron guides.

Chevrolet big block valves from PEP Las Vegas.  Modified to fit the GTV.  Durabar cast iron valve guides, self lubricating.

Thanks for that Jerry. It seems mine are just stainless. Dumb question but How can you check to see if they ar chromed stems?

Outside of the laboratory, I don't know how to check to see if the stems are chromed.  I depended on the manufacturer to be honest.

You might be able to tell by comparing magnetism. Carbon steel has a higher magnetic attraction then stainless steel.

It was Jerry's comment that he runs chromed stainless that made me wonder. But looking through a glass at mine, I'm pretty sure they are plain stainless.

One crude test is to check the hardness.  A pocket knife should score or scrape a stainless steel surface. Generally it would glide over a chrome surface and it would be hard to mark it with hand pressure.

Good point, Andrew. Today hopefully, I'll be giving it a functional test, proof of the pudding and all that🙂
