Yesterday was likely the last hurrah for the riding season. Its
supposed to piss rain for the next week and then we'll be deeply into
the holiday season. So, some local Guzzi folks did a day ride from San
Jose, up Mount Hamilton to the Lick Observatory, and out east to
Livermore with a visit to SpeedSports. Gray, cold, and damp in the
morning down at sea level, but crystal clear once we got above the cloud
line on the mountain. The modern Guzzi riders are all impressed by the
way an old single can handle mountain roads.

Along the way we bumped into another Guzzi single at our lunch stop.
Here's a nice pic of my blue Falcone with the Astore.

I'm afraid our riding season is also over.  A bit of snow on the ground now.  We had the best November I can remember though.  About 10 degrees above normal all month.  Got to ride a few times.  A rare treat in Noivember here in the Fingerlakes area of New York.  Nice picture Pat!

November was great here too! I've put 1200 miles in the last month on my "new" thumper, a '77 Yamaha XT500 Enduro that I bought for $400 with 660 miles on it. We had four inches of snow yesterday, but I still went out "exploring" for a few hours today. Shinko 244 knobbies do a great job on road or off.

I thought Californians could ride year 'round?

Dam - I wanted to go on that ride, but am having troubles with the
Falcone.

Does your clutch adjuster have lock nuts on both sides of the
adjusting sleeve? Mine only has one on the right side. The threads
that hold the adjuster sleeve (top of the engine case) are stripping,
and pulling the adjuster out to the right, engaging the clutch at very
awkward moments. Like when I'm at a light. Anyway, moving the nut
over to the other side seems to have solved the problem - as long as
it doesn't pull toward the left.

Now on to the flywheel shaft play....

Right up until the seasonal list of honey-dos and the ever expanding
lineage of relatives.

I'm not following these lefts and rights and where the threads are
stripped. How about posting some digital pics with annotation? If you
don't know how, just send to me and I'll post. Much easier to follow
the discussion and comment.

> Now on to the flywheel shaft play....

Care to explain more about this motion? Up and down or in and out? I
just cured this on my SuperAlce, but it means digging deep. In and out
motion means the right side ball bearing of the crank shaft is loose
within the case. Some tiny amount can be tolerated if it just means
ball and race wear. Serious motion means the whole bearing is sliding
in its recess. It is possible to pull the timing cover and peek into
the crank bearing on the right side while someone else pulls and pushes
on the flywheel. You will then be able to see the outer bearing race
moving and that isn't good. Can't leave it like that or it will just
worsen. Need to strip the engine and Loctite the bearing into the case.

Sorry. :-(

Actually, my chums from Schio are coming over here the first week of
January. If it warms, maybe we'll take a ride!

Well I had fun and went to the Ace Cafe on the Guzzino for my Sunday
morning egg on toast. Watery sunshine made it tempting, but going
round the North Circular on a 30 mph bike is taxing. I am using a high
output cycle LED flasher as a supplementary rear light. Someone told
me it is illegal on a motor vehicle if set to flash instead of steady
state, but I may have inadvertently set it wrong. No one complained.
At the cafe it was definitely the smallest bike there and got the most
attention.

Thanks to new 51 tooth sprocket from Jon Fraser bike is much more
useable now, and less heroic clutch slip needed to get under way. I
saw 40 mph downhill with wind behind, but going the other way into
wind it is lucky to get over 28 mph (true). I reckon flat road
windless cruising speed is 32 mph.

Patrick,
I think you need to stress that riding season here is about 11 months on
average.
I ride dirt bikes too so that riding season is just getting good.

Glad you got out, nice shot of the singles.

BTW, the 2010 Falcone tour is scheduled for Puglia. Have to see what I
can afford.

Nice picture there Patrick ......... Looks real sunny & dry. My last ride on the SA was a week ago Saturday that I shared earlier. But my last ride of the season for me might have been this past Saturday to our monthly guzzi breakfast some 35 miles away at 24 degrees and cloudy. It did warm up to 31 degrees by noon and the sun was out for a while. My Cal III doesn't warm up as fast but the big windscreen sure helps me .....
By the time you read this the weather gods are saying 2-4 inches of white crap by morning and Tuesday there could be more. Depending how close the cold front comes ... Winter sucks even more now that I don't have my snow machines to play with any more.

Also looks like we got there just in time! Today there is a pretty good
dusting of snow throughout the Bay Area hills with the Lick Observatory
socked in. You can see live pics here:

http://mthamilton.ucolick.org/hamcam/

Depending on the current cloud flow, you might see a good view of the
snow volume today or tomorrow morning. Obviously it all goes black at
night.

Puglia,

interesting - never really been thru Puglia. Messed around on the SE coast around Amalfi, and did buy a Laverda 750 engine in Abruzzo once a long time back. That's abou the sum of my Southern Italian experience.

Sounds nice tho - as we're currently enjoying our 26th straight day of rain. Not real rain, just the light pissy stuff that won.t quit. Last year it was a record - 52 days straight..

This is not Italy....it's Germany with Pizza...

It's Tuesday morning and the entire bay area is freezing. Where's that
damn global warming when you need it?
