Hi there Guzzi thumpers mavens, Zipolo is my "pen" name and as you
all, I am deseased with
passion for these machines. I have accumulated during the years a few
singles and I have been reading all the posts from this group. This
prompted me to take advantage of my fluent Italian
to search for suppliers of parts, since Mr. Tadini is no more
available; and I found some.
I have a supplier of replica engine parts, race brakes, oil pumps and
other contrivances. I also found two suppliers of used parts.
There are, however, some hurdles: most Italian used parts suppliers
give me the impression that they prefer to fly "below the radar"
therefore they do not ship overseas. Some other suppliers are not too
quick to respond to e-mail, and sometimes things get mixed up, the
parts take a long time to get here and so on and so forth. Also they
tend not to advertise.
My latest discovery is a gentleman that claims to have tons of parts
and complete machines.
I spoke to him this morning ( Skipe is a great thing) and he promised
photographs.
We will see.
Now, to send the parts here: my young sister (strapping 63) has helped
me before in relaying
paccages to me, since she lives in Rome. I am in the process of
developing a way to make sure that the parts are the correct ones.
There are, in other parts of the world, some clubs addressed to a
single brand, with incredible networks of parts suppliers and parts
readily available.
I am not business man so I can use some help. Reading all the posts I
realised that there is a lot of talent out there addressed to
different directions so I thought: how about putting our heads
together and creating something for the benefit of all the members of
this forum?
I would love to hear your opinion on this since it is a big
undertaking.
My best to you all, Zipolo

Zipolo,

Since there are only a couple hundred Guzzi 500cc Singles in North
America, maybe less, I'd say the market for parts of any kind is
severely limited. You would probably lose money and certainly couldn't
make profit enough to support your effort even on a hobby level. There
is a market for junk Guzzi Singles suitable for restoration, however.
But these days, economics are bad and people only want to pay $2-4000
for a non-running, restoreable carcass.

JerryK

Jerry,

Don't forget the rest of the world. There must be at least that number here in the UK, and they are also popular in the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia. It would be interesting to see how many there are left in the world.

Personally i think such a business could be viable. After all it depends on how much Zipolo wants to have as profit margins. If we want these old parts we need to be prepared to pay for them.

I would agree that there is a market for bikes to restore. And here the singles are getting popular and the prices are rising because old bikes are seen as a safe place to invest your money.

Regards form a rainy England,

Steve

I go to mostra scambios in Italy once a year or so - usually Novgero as it is within walking distance of Milan Linate airport and have tried shopping for others in the jumble.
Unless one knows exactly what one is looking for and can pick out the bits from piles of metal it is often dissappointing to both me and the person for whom I am trying to locate bits as my failure rate is high.
That's the downside of offering to help.

Zippolo is right about reluctance to ship outside Italy but more frustrating  is the ability to take payment other than by direct bank transfer which for non-Euro zone bank account holders is quite expensive especially if the transaction value is small.
Having someone in Italy to get bits from local suppliers and ship is a great offer.

Cheers
Gordon

No business deal is ever perfect.  Every business plan includes some small 'waste' margin which accounts for errors and failures.  Stuff happens and you still have to run the business.  With old moto parts, especially used ones, the sellers description of 'mint condition' may not match the buyer's perception.  How does the buyer return it?  Who eats the loss if you can't satisfy both buyer and seller?  What happens if it is damaged or lost in shipment?  Hey, Les, how many dents and scratches in that pristine NOS tank you just bought?

I too have occasionally brought parts back from Italy or asked my local contacts to ship things on my behalf.  Sometimes they are for third parties, not me.  I do that rarely.  I have been burned by 'wrong' parts, mislabelled parts, etc.  I promised X to someone and Y shows up.  The cost to resolve the problem exceeds the cost of the part. Someone owns an expensive paperweight.  Is that Zippolo?

Money and customs are separate issues of their own.  Since I host a lot of guests, I often have them carry small extra bits in their luggage.  By mail, I've had a $25 item show up with a $25 customs bill.  Labelling is everything.   Americans don't even carry cash and checks any more.  Our culture is credit cards.  I can ebay something from China by credit card and its on my stoop in a week.  What's up with Italy?

I get a good social feeling down deep when I am able to suppy something obscure via my Italian contacts.  Conversely, I have a strong sense of guilt and regret when a promise goes sour and my reputation is tainted.

If Zipolo lived in Italy and could control the situation personally, I
would agree that an international effort would be wonderful. In my mind
a drop shipping business starting in the USA and ending in another
country, with the shippers in Italy would be disastrous. It's just to
clumsy to work well from the USA, at least from my perspective. I
really wish there was one person or firm in Italy that I could get parts
from. Years ago this idea existed and I ordered lots of parts through
Agostinis in Mandello.

The way I see it, the best solution would be to have someone in Italy willing to establish himself as a distribution and marketing agent for worldwide sales. It would have to be an actual service turning a profit and probably working in more than just Guzzi single parts.
I think after that a big problem is the Italians tend to be far better as artists and creators than business people.

Other than having the right person rise up to offer such a service, the question would be, how many would actually be willing to pay a 30-40% (or more) premium on parts purchased to make it a profitable service?

This also does not take into consideration the time spent to attended swap meets and such to find specific items for people but just dealing with the difficult established companies there.

A network of overseas friends and enthusiasts still seems to be the logical alternative. Through email lists I have found help when needed but I doubt many would want to take it much more seriously than an occasional favor for a friend thing.

Hi Zippolo,

I would say have a go, starting in a small way.

Look at this site:

THis guy gets good prices for stuff and has a good inventory - especially Guzzino but only trades by credit card in Spain. No foreign or UK credit cards or Paypal but he still seems to do well and re-stock.  I have bought a lot of Guzzino  stuff but have to send him a bank transfer which is a pain.

I would think you could make a success of supplying vintage Guzzi parts, maybe supplemented with Ebay shop and sales. You need not invest too much money at the beginning until you see how it goes.

You are right about Italian parts makers not advertising. I bought a Sport 15 kickstart quadrant and gear set in UK for a very high price from a guy who knows suppliers in Italy, but I could not locate the Italian maker myself. If you were ale to locate parts you could also make a profit on supply of individual orders, working as a 'finder' without needing to buy multiple items for stock.

Can you find out what has happened to Tadini's stock?

Best regards

Andrew
