Hello Everyone

Trying to help my Astore owning friend find a new float, his is a bit dented....

Surprising or not, even here in italy we are having a hard time sourcing one

any other leads, outside of italy too?

As im looking also on non dellorto possibilities, like form a Bing or something else, can anyone confirm the weight of the float?

Tnxs!

Would help to know what the carb is.
This was Herdan: <https://motoestore.com/>
There is also a big Dellorto supplier in the UK but I can't seem to find my link.

I put a Jikov on my Bianchi. It is very crude, but it works well.
The older DelOrto parts are getting hard  to find.
I wonder if it is possible to desolder, the old float, straighten out the dent and resolder it. Maybe practice on and an old Amal float that is not so hard to find??

A dent itself isn't so bad as long as the float still floats. You might be able to shim the needle up with a small washer, I've done that before, or file a small groove to hold the clip in a different spot, done that too.

Resoldering an old float is fun but futile.  Brass undergoes a process known as de-zincification over the years.  The zinc leaches out of the alloy,  I guess into the fuel and the passing water molecules. Then it becomes brittle .  I've tried (and I'm not alone ) in trying to solder over or tin over cracks with a skin of solder.  It never lasts.  The brass soon cracks somewhere else nearby.  If you look at the original crack through a glass you can often see spider-like cracks running out from it through the brass.  You solder up the float, drop it in hot water to look for a stream of bubbles from a leak. If there are none you put it in the bike and are hopeful.   A few days later it sinks and the carb starts flooding.

As I noted, If it is dented but not leaking I would just use it as it is.

I have a dent in a float on my triumph trw solex carb and it works just fine. If it is cracked, has anyone tried super glue??

A fuel resistant epoxy is best. We used to use if as a coating on foam floats after modifying them on our X1/9 race car.

tnxs everyone for the replies!

to keep on topic, carb is  a MD27F, has just dented float, no leaks

i also have bad experiences with soldering floats and use high end epoxy when needed to seal cracks (just recently, on the Bing of my NSU Max....)

But de-soldering the float to take out the dent and then putting it back together with epoxy is not a way to go IMHO,

the dent can have influence on fuel height, essentially same weight with less displacement volume could mean fule is too high, regretfully, i could never find an official fuel level spec for the MD27F.... so all a bit of guess work.

gonna try  the resources pointed out as well as amal/bing/jikov paths and report

cheers!

Agree there will be a theoretical difference in fuel height with dented float but I find it hard to imagine it would have an appreciable effect on the running.  If it does not flood when bike is level and at rest I would try everything else first - cleaning out all fuel passages, jets and drillings.
I suppose I might try a Jikov one day but it feels like pain.  How would I get the spec for the needle taper, cutaway, and jet sizes?
