Certainly interesting and it would work. I probably won't
use it since I have a bead/walnut shell blaster.

As Dorien said, you still have to clean the inside of a carb. Do you think the soda method can do that? I know how hard those inside passages are to get clean.

Soda could do it. Most of the stuff on the inside is that
white Zinc Chloride powder that accumulates in passages. At
least the soda can be washed out easily. I just don't use
one because I have alternate means, otherwise I can't see
any reason not to.

It is certainly cheap enough to make one. In fact, I have
all the pieces to do so right on hand. (but no carbs to clean).

Dawn detergent and an ultrasonic cleaner would work too.

Jerry,

Why Dawn? I use an ultrasonic cleaner, but have yet to find the optimal ingredient for really cleaning cast pot metal and aluminum without staining it at 180 degrees.

Dawn is the harshest detergent you can buy and it contains
no perfume or any of those things that leave a deposit. It
is pretty well known among electroplaters as about the best
detergent cheaply/commonly available.

In the lab I used Alconox which is virtually pure
surfactant. It isn't cheap. http://www.alconox.com/

Pot metal is a real bear to clean. Anything acid will eat
out the zinc, and anything basic will eat out the aluminum.
So you have to control the pH fairly closely. Maybe the
alconox site has some advice. Makes me wonder if distilled
water, pH adjusted to 7 with ammonium hydroxide and
containing a two drops of jet dry would work as a plain
water cleaner for pot metal or aluminum.

Make sure you are really getting a deposit on your pot metal
or aluminum, and not just some sort of etching that defracts
light making the surface appear dark or mottled.

Thanks Jerry,
It does seem like more of a dark etching that I get. It's usually in some areas (often as streaks) rather than over the whole surface. That then has me bead blasting to brighten the exterior surface finish, and washing the beads away afterwards; making the ultrasonic cleaning mostly redundant.
I'll give Dawn a try and see how that goes.

We had a family jewelry store and used a TSP solution in our ultrasonic. It worked great for the precious metals and fine on stainless and regular steels but turned aluminum a nasty black. I’ve also found that an ultrasonic is not going to clean the worst deposits that might be clogging passages. For those you will still need to remove drilling plugs and use a stiff wire. For carb restoration I think the best route is to use the soda blast followed by a soak in the ultrasonic. Reassemble and give it a try.

Here at Motion Pro I’ve been using some K&L ultrasonic cleaner we have on the shelf. Seems to work well but it’s expensive. I’ll try some Dawn. I think Ivory is unscented as well isn’t it?

Thanks Zipolo,

For now I found a book on ebay coming from Italy. Everything here is sort of long term. Restoration work usually takes a back seat to getting other bikes ready for the next ride. I will also help out in the warehouse and custom cable shop when we are busy.

Rick, do I know  what you mean!!!!!! I am surrounded by projects (which include the
Saturno corsa). I can still be of assistance if you do not understand what the book says.
You know, I am in fact from the other side of the ditch..............
Happy trails my friend
