Broadband Strategy
The Gustavus Community Network board met October 21 and settled on an
overall broadband strategy that relies on Phase 2 of the Connect America
Fund. That program is still being developed by the Federal
Communications Commission. The strategy also outlines possible actions
that can be taken to advance broadband while awaiting the full
implementation of the Connect America Fund. For details, read the GCN
Board meeting minutes:

The GCN Board also discussed the future of the current Gustavus
Community Network, including the likelihood that GCN will cease
operations on July 1, 2015 unless much cheaper and faster upstream
Internet access becomes available before then.
Rainforest Telecom Update
Juneau-based Rainforest Telecom remains the only prospect for faster,
cheaper Internet access. Principal Wade McKeown demonstrated his
continued strong interest in Gustavus by bringing a bucket truck to
Gustavus to conduct wireless site surveys on October 8. McKeown had
previously reported successfully connecting to Hoonah Mountain from the
hydroelectric project site East of Gustavus. On this visit he was able
to establish a wireless link from the Park road, just East of the Depot.
That link would benefit Bartlett Cove, but not Gustavus, unless a
communications link is built between Bartlett Cove and Gustavus. Such a
link would be established if the proposed electrical inter-tie were
built. Meanwhile, Rainforest Telecom continues discussions with Alaska
Power and Telephone about siting wireless equipment in the hydro project
area.
