I struggled for 20 years to bring public Internet to my tiny community, but (besides legitimate technical challenges) AT&T’s monopoly stranglehold on the middle mile killed our chances. Like ours, San Francisco’s story is emblematic of a system tilted to enrich incumbents, at the expense of those with less. I’m hoping low earth orbit satellite Internet service will bring real competition to an Internet access market that is, especially in rural areas, a lightly- or un-regulated natural monopoly.
