Hi Susan,
I’m copying my reply to the Gustavus Broadband group.
Yes, I have been following OneWeb and other Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellite developments with interest. Low- and medium-earth orbit constellations have been discussed for decades. Until the first satellites of a constellation are operational, it’s nothing I would count on, but it does sound like it might be more than just talk now that OneWeb has funding and says they are building satellites.
If and when it actually happens, LEO satellite could be a game-changer.
My optimism is cautious, but if it actually happens, and lives up to the technical promises, and is affordable, LEO could eliminate the need for a local last-mile network and middle-mile backhaul.
Meanwhile, I am in my second month of the new HughesNet. It’s better service than I thought possible from geosynchronous satellite. It still suffers from unavoidable latency, but download speeds are fast (sustained 25 Mbps with higher bursts), and the cost is reasonable (basically, $3/GB). For heavier users this is now the service to beat in Gustavus. Too bad there are so many properties that cannot see the satellite (at 136 degrees true, just 15 degrees above the horizon).
Nate

Hi, Nate.
Have you been hearing anything about this outfit, OneWeb, talking about launching hundreds of Low Earth Orbit Satellites to offer global broadband services, starting with covering all of Alaska, within a year plus? See article Linked below. Your thoughts?
Susan

Yes, I get consistent 25 Mbps down. No, latency has little to no effect on streaming. It does affect interactive applications like web browsing. HughesNet says they do not support VPNs for this reason. Yes, I see Hughes is a OneWeb investor.
