Our Bechstein dates back to the late 1800s, is in wonderful condition and has an incredibly warm tone. Having had the piano for around six months I decided to sample it for the PianoBook as it has given me a new creative pallet.

As a pianist, samplist, and as someone with a tiny little bit of knowledge about piano maintenance, thing, and repair, I'm pretty picky about piano samples -- as my other reviews will attest. I can find almost nothing which could be changed or improved about this library, however. It's immaculately recorded, it sounds beautiful, and it's so very playable. I will admit that there are some very tiny inconsistencies in the trimming of the starts of the samples. I love this library so much that I went through and edited them to be all consistently tight because I love this library so much. This is probably my all-time favorite felted piano on the entire site.

Sam recommended a few pianos to me and I tested them all out, next to other top felt pianos including the OA piano, Noire, Spitfire Felt Piano and all of the others on Pianobook that I personally think are sonically superior.

What stands out to me about this piano is how well recorded it is and how even the sound and playability are. This felt piano works in the context of actual music better than any of the other Pianobook felt pianos because of it's frequency response. The low end isn't so bloated and overpowering like a lot of other felt pianos are.

I understand the need to position the microphones close to the hammers in order to get that really intimate sound quality where you can literally feel the mechanics of the piano working. It definitely adds to the kinetic experience that connects a person to the sample instrument as if they were really sitting on the piano bench playing it. I think some of the sampled pianos suffer because not everyone is a recording engineer and knows how to equalize the samples to keep the instrument sounding even both in volume and frequency response.

This piano has a very thick tone and very rich resonance but retains enough clarity to work in the context of a mix. It balances itself easier with less of a need to start carving things up with an equalizer compared to other felt pianos that are very bass heavy. Bass heavy pianos can work beautifully in solo piano music but if you need something more versatile, this is your best option currently on Pianobook for the soft felt sound.

Compared to something like Christian Henson's Claustrophobic piano, this piano sounds more "vanilla" and less characterful and immersive with the nuances of piano imperfections that Spitfire are the masters of. Naked, the Claustrophobic piano is more impressive but when it comes time to have a working instrument for a piece of music, The Emperor and King is going to surprise you with it's usefulness.

Really beautiful and so inspirational piano sound. Chris said that he is considering to re-sampling with additional velocity layers, that would be awesome. I will be the first to get it, even if becomes a commercial piano library!

I decided to follow the example of Christian Henson, whom I had seen sample a piano in a video I had watched a few days prior (I think it was the claustrophobic piano), and sampled the piano in fifths, filing the empty spaces by tuning the notes down. As this was only my second time sampling an instrument, coming just off of finishing the LaPaz guitar, I took it somewhat easy with this one as well. I tried recording four velocity layers for the piano, with no round robins.

I don't know it is intentional, but if you engage the sustain pedal, the sounds will loop back to the beginning and the notes will all retrigger. It takes a long time for them to go back around, so it's not like a swarm, but if you're careful about what you add, the results can be really fun and inspiring. Not sure if this was supposed to happen or if it's an accident, but it's certainly an inspiring accident. Yes, there are some room noises in the samples. The samples are also mapped to the keyboard two octaves too high. The dynamic range isn't very even from key to key. I would never pick this piano to use for solo piano work, but I think it has real potential in creative applications with looping.

This piano has a pretty interesting old fashioned sound. I prefer felt piano sounds with alot of detail but im sure others will really like this. The GUI is simple but pretty effective. However i find myself having to hit the keys alot harder than usual which is a turn off also as everyone mentioned the samples are moved up on the keyboard an octave which makes this less playable. I think this is a good start and there's potential here but in its current state its hard to work with

Let's start our journey with Versilian Upright No. 1, a fantastic piano VST plugin that captures the warm and intimate sound of an upright piano. With its expressive dynamics and detailed sampling, this plugin brings a touch of authenticity to your compositions.

Spitfire Audio Soft Piano stands out as a remarkable virtual instrument that delivers a delicate and ethereal piano sound. Its soft and dreamy tone captures the essence of introspection, allowing composers to craft captivating melodies and atmospheric textures.

For those seeking a more delicate and ethereal piano sound, Spitfire Audio Soft Piano is a go-to choice. This free piano plugin offers a soft and dreamy tone that is perfect for creating gentle melodies or atmospheric soundscapes. With its exceptional sound quality and expressive capabilities, Spitfire Audio Soft Piano is a must-have for composers looking to evoke emotion through their music.

Salamander Piano by Bigcat Instruments offers a remarkable virtual instrument that brings the richness and authentic quality of a Yamaha C5 grand piano to your compositions. This free piano plugin captures the original instrument's rich tonal qualities impressively well, delivering an immersive playing experience. The expressive sustains and soft pedal samples add depth and nuance to your performances, allowing for greater musical expression.

One of the standout features of The Grand DSK Piano is its multiple velocity layers. This provides a heightened level of realism, as the plugin responds dynamically to different playing styles and intensities. From delicate pianissimos to thunderous fortissimos, this plugin captures the dynamic range of a grand piano, allowing for nuanced and expressive performances.

basically the midi note corresponds to which note on the keyboard it is. dynamic is the dynamic number, which is a number between 1 and the number of dynamics (which is set by dynamics). dynamics are played according to velocity (higher velocity chooses a higher dynamic sample). variation is a number 1 or higher, for each variation on that note - if you want to have multiple samples for the same dynamic and same note. release is 1 only if the note is a release event (like a pedal up on piano) but in your case should always be 0. honestly, for drums, with one dynamic and no variations, your files should look like this:

I added the claustrophobic piano and its sounds really good. I will add gentle vibes, and soft string spurs before I make a release, but if you want to try the piano right away you can just update mx.samples and it should be there.

A new piano dropped on Sunday with a Decent Sampler version on
It's called the Claustrophic Piano. Unfortunately, the 3 metafiles show up as *.dspreset and need to be renamed as *.dslibrary which requires AudioShare. I downloaded on a laptop and heard the piano with the Neumann KU 100 mics there but haven't got it installing on my iPad yet.

Upright Piano also features key release samples and envelope controls for adjusting the attack and release time. If you need a versatile free piano VST that is easy to use, this offering from 99Sounds is well worth looking into.

Not all virtual instruments need to offer the most extensive feature set, and 4Front Piano is about a minimalist as they get. The sound is naturally pretty bright like you imagine a parlor piano would be. This allows 4Front Piano to cut through a mix but it might be a little too bright for solo piano parts.

While the instrument might not offer much at all in terms of customization or visualization, it is a good free piano VST plugin that takes up virtually no resources. It runs on a mix of sampling and synthesizing technology to make a convincing hybrid virtual instrument. 4Front comes in several plugin formats, including VST, AU, and RTAS.

DPiano-A is based on MDA Piano, an old freeware plugin that seemingly has no visualization other than a few control settings. But what it completely lacked in GUI, it made up for in the number of sound customization options it offered. In the meanwhile, MDA Piano became open-source software and Dead Duck Software refined the code to create a more polished-looking piano plugin called DPiano-A.

With DPiano-A, you have control over the decay and release of the envelope, hardness, and treble, as well as the stereo width parameter. You can also set the velocity sensitivity, tuning, and polyphony. Messing with the sliding polyphony control can even get you into synth territory, going way beyond simple piano sounds.

Some freeware plug-ins are more robust than others, and Keyzone Classic is one of the more advanced free piano VST plugin on the market. It offers presets that emulate various acoustic pianos like Steinway, Yamaha, Rhodes, and more.

Nice list. If you include free piano libraries (as opposed to single plugins) the list could possibly be much more extensive though. For example: There is lot of good stuff in the free Pianobook.co.uk library (side project of Spitfire Audio).

This is a demo featuring Christian Henson's Claustrophobia Piano for Pianobook. What a delight - such an intimate sound! Also features Southsea Glimmer by Jacob Maloney providing some low end and a few LABS instruments for good measure. Fairly rough production but you get the point.
