That's no problem! Our instructors often make adjustments once we see children on the ice. For example, if you sign your daughter up to Learn to Skate and she's ready and willing to go for Learn to Play Hockey, we can just switch her into the other program. If you're ever in doubt, our Ice Director is always happy to assess your kid's skill level.
If your child has never skated at all, we recommend signing up for Snow Plow and if, once on the ice, she's confident and comfortable, we can switch her into Learn to Skate (an additional charge would apply). You can always talk to a member of staff here at Walker Ice and Fitness if you need more help.
We do not allow parents/guardians out on the ice with the kids. We want to build up confidence for children on the ice and we've found that it's best if they work with our instructors. Even if you have a lot of skating experience, we still need to have our certified staff lead the sessions and it gets confusing for kids when their parents are on the ice, too. Part of learning to skate is learning to fall over and younger kids actually do better with this when Mom and Dad aren't on the ice.
This program is designed for players who have completed a Learn to Skate Program or have been skating for a minimum of a full year. Open to all ages, the focus is on teaching early fundamentals needed to play hockey, including skating, stick handling, shooting, passing, and small area games.
This program has been designed to help the players that completed our 8-week Learn to Play program and wish to continue to work on their SKATING & BASIC STICK HANDLING & BASIC ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT (OFF-ICE TRAINING) to get them to next level.
Selection of hockey equipment is a key issue for players, parents and coaches. When purchasing and fitting hockey equipment, remember two important factors: 1) make certain the player is adequately protected and 2) be sure the fitting allows freedom of movement so the player can properly perform the necessary skills. By carefully considering these two factors, your child will be more comfortable and will better enjoy their participation.
A complete set of hockey equipment can be purchased for a relatively reasonable cost. Shop around for the best values and remember that you need not buy the most expensive equipment. Consider used equipment, but keep in mind the equipment must fit properly to provide maximum protection.
Skates: Purchase skates that will fit your child today, with no more than 1/2" allowed for growth. Seek adequate protection in the ankle, toe and instep areas. Improperly fitted skates will hamper your child's ability to skate.
Helmet: Must be of a design and construction approved by the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC). Must be sized at the time of purchase to fit properly. The chin-strap must always be fastened.

These days, skateboarding games are a beloved genre that is somewhat underserved. In the early 2000s, skateboarding games were everywhere, building off the success of the Tony Hawk franchise, and some of them are considered as some of the best games ever made. But in the last 10 years, true AAA-level skateboarding games have become rare, with a handful of indie devs and occasional larger releases serving a genre that has a lot of hungry fans. This list compiles the best of those games from recent years based on critical and fan ratings, but the key is that these are all easily accessible on modern hardware.
Session and the next game on this list are two very similar games. They channel the old Skate games in terms of style, giving you maps to roam around and try to hit tricks on with a complex control system that takes a long time to master, which is exactly what fans are looking for.
Learning skating fundamentals before starting hockey is key. Coaches will progress kids individually through the levels of Learn to Skate and Learn to Play based on skills demonstrated. Each participant will advance through the various levels at their own pace. All kids should begin in Learn to Skate and will be placed accordingly.

LTS/LTP: Geared towards kids 3-9 who have never skated nor played hockey before. It's designed to provide kids the basics of skating independently and preparing them with the fundamentals of hockey in a non-competitive setting to start.
All LTS/LTP skaters should plan to attend either the 8am or 9am LTS class based on their age/ability. Children in the 9am LTS class are welcome to remain and participate in the 10am LTP class. As children develop proficiency in their hockey skills, they will be invited to attend the 11am class as well.
If you are not sure which LTS class your child should attend or if your child is skating proficiently enough to attend the 10am LTP class, please consult with one of the LTS/LTP coaches. They would be happy to assess your child and make sure he or she is in the right class.
