The PhD sounds great ... I hope it passes and gets published one day. I'm hoping to start an MTh at Oxford in September, and when I get round to my dissertation, I"m sure Gunton will feature in some way.

(OK, this doesn’t sound like a dissertation on Gunton, but he’s in there!) Michelle ‘Chelle’ Stearns, ‘Unity, God and Music: Arnold Schoenberg’s Philosophy of Compositional Unity in Trinitarian Perspective’. Abstract: "This project consists of a theological exploration of the concept of unity, divine and created, through an engagement with the works of the composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951). It proceeds by examining Schoenberg’s philosophy of unity as it is embodied in his compositional theory and practice, and brings to light his explicit and implicit metaphysical commitments through the lens of Arthur Schopenhauer’s metaphysical system. A critique is offered from the perspective of a trinitarian theology of unity, with special reference to Colin Gunton. This theological critique of Schoenberg employs music to assist in creating a conceptual theological ‘space’ in which to sound out divergent models of unity. Thus, this thesis shows not only how theology can benefit the philosophy of music, but also how the philosophy of music can benefit theology."

Terry has left a new comment on your post "PhDs and Masters":

My PhD thesis, due for submission in late summer, still has no formal title (!) and has no major discussion of Gunton but is entirely influenced by his emphasis on the Trinity! In a nutshell, I am arguing that the conceptual framework of primary and secondary causality in which providence is usually understood needs correction by a trinitarian understanding of providence as the faithful action of Father, Son and Spirit.

Good to see this blog alive again, Nate. Any chance you could publicise the Gunton Conference for us, too?

Ok guys, I am going to step right in at the beginner's nursery slope level.

I am a 38 year old ordained Baptist pastor in Newcastle, Australia. I am sure why I subscribed to this list except that I love theology with a passion and am always wanting to push my boundaries.

To be honest a lot of what you have shared in the past few emails has been double-dutch to me but I am hanging in there.

What I want to know, in layman's terms, is - what is causality?

Thanks

Les.
