In my guide we'll discuss many of the beginning aspects of Final Fantasy XI and what is unique about the Eden private server. The goal of this guide is to make the game more approachable to new players who have never touched FFXI before and cover content up through getting your subjob.

Eden is a Treasures of Aht Urhgan server and does it's best to emulate the Sept. 2008 state of the game (Our 'era'). With the exception of some ToAU content, anything after that date is considered 'out of era' (OOE). That means no Wings of the Goddess, and by extension no Dancer or Scholar.

You are allowed to dual box on Eden (Play two characters at once). Just create a second account in the bootloader (The black text box that pops up after you launch from Ashita/Windower) and log both in at the same time. Check #Eden-rules Discord channel for limitations around this.

Client limitations will only list the first 7 items you have up for sale but you can list an unlimited amount of items. If you check Sales Status you'll need to zone or relog before you can list more items on the AH. Check your Delivery Box in your Mog House for money from anything that sold.

Mog Wardrobe is portable storage for equipment that unlocks at rank 3, rank 6, and completing the Apocolypse Nigh missions (Talk to the Moogle in your Mog House after completing one of these missions to unlock). Accessed through the gear menu or by typing /wardrobe, /wardrobe2, /wardrobe 3. Functions as an extension of your inventory that you can equip gear from.

GMs are volunteers who have their own private discord that gets notified when someone needs them. They help at their convenience and calls answering time may vary, especially if you have a complicated issue that requires a higher level GM. Thankfully at this stage of Eden's development, these situations are very rare.

Race is generally unimportant at endgame as equipment makes up for any stat differences or deficits. Most of the difference is felt earlier on. If you really want to min-max, Taru are the best mages, Mithra are the most accurate dds, Elvaan swing weapons the hardest, and Galkas are the best at soaking damage.

FFXI's job system lets you change jobs in your Mog House (Residential Area on the city map) any time you want. You carry your skill levels with you from one job to the next, but no experience points. If you level up your sword on Warrior, then your Thief will be more proficient with swords right out the gate. If actions per minute is a concern, mages are generally busier in parties at early levels then melee.

If you're a new player, or a returning one, I recommend checking out this link which is a guide to setting up the UI. FFXI UI is pretty clunky by today's standards and taking a few minutes to customize it will go a long way to improving your experience. Note: Chat Filters don't save on any private server and require the Filters addon for Ashita (Tell chime and party chat hold options do save, however.). More about addons at the bottom of this guide.

If your game is too dark in places, and it likely is, you can press F11. This is the default toggle built into Ashita to max out the brightness. If all that happens is your character illuminates and nothing else, log out and turn *off* Bump Mapping in Ashita

Tutorial NPC are a recent addition to Eden, and help give guidance to brand new players through a small series of quests that result in a free bonus exp ring. If you start these be sure to complete quest #4 for your free ring.

Despite what the tutorial npcs tell you, exp loss in era starts at level 4. You lose 10% of your current levels worth of exp up to a 2400 maximum when you die. Raise, Raise II, and Raise III reduce this penalty. If you're wondering why the npcs say exp loss starts at level 31 it's because changing npc text is very challenging and not a simple fix.

Type /map to pull up the map of whichever city you chose to start in, and find a gate to the outside world. At these gates there are two important npcs. One will give you a buff called Signet which gives a slew of passive combat buffs when fighting mobs that are lower level then you. The other will be a nation mission npc which is where the main story of FFXI begins. You can typically tackle the first mission solo around level 10-12 depending on your job, equipment, and nation.

Being a fresh character is hard. Best practice is to just find a good loop and kill the level 1 mobs right outside the town gates (My personal favorite is in the south end of West Sarutabaruta.) . The drawback to this is that you won't get many skill ups. For those you'll have to find higher level targets to fight, farther from the gate.

Every weapon, defensive, and magic skill has it's own skill level. To skill up you need to fight a monster that's higher level then your current skill/3. For example, if your skill level is 9, you need to fight a mob higher then level 3 to skill up. At level 5 skill in a weapon you'll get your first Weapon Skill which can be used when you have over 1000tp. These skills carry over from job to job and are permanent gains.

Notice: Sometimes a combat skill will become blue (which indicates a skill is capped) in the menu prematurely. It's a common bug when starting out. Swapping any visible piece of gear will fix it. So just un-equip and re-equip your armor to sort it out.

Save your Beastmen Seals, they're for special arena fights that drop unique or hard to get equipment. You can throw these right into your Mog House for future use. An NPC named Shami will store these for you if you trade them to him in Port Jeuno.

You can list items individually or as a full stack. A stack is usually 12 but some items like ammunition stack to 99. When multiple of an item are for sale the item listed for the lowest price sells first. So if the going rate for earth crystals is 400g, and you list yours for 399(or less) it will sell more quickly. Don't undercut too much or you risk tanking the market.

Linkshells are this games guilds. Some are focused on just chillin, some are all about killing the highest level monsters and running end-game events. Check the #linkshell-recruitment channel on discord for one that suites your needs. Or /yell in-game and someone will likely hook you up.

Doing quests will earn you Reputation which lowers the cost to buy items from npc's in town and opens up more and more quests for you to access. Maxing fame should be a medium term goal for new players as some of the unlockable quests include spells like warp for blm, or unlocking avatars for Summoner.

As a new player you're going to be broke and gear doesn't grow on trees. Some people may choose to level multiple jobs to 8-10 in order to sell more monster drops, others may take up fishing, or mining, or gardening (Mining and gardening do have some startup cost to buy gear or planters), Here's some guides for making gil based on your starter city. Keep in mind, dual boxing a 2nd character to mine or fish for you while you level the character you want to play is allowed.

Crafting in XI is all about smooshing a crystal with some raw materials. It's very common to lose money while crafting until getting to higher levels. And even at high levels it takes a knack for finding profit synths and exploiting them before other high level crafters can.

You may have noticed there is an outpost in your starter zones. It's either in West Ronfuare, North Gustaberg, or West Sarutabaruta. These outposts (and all outposts) can be teleported to after completing a small quest called a supply mission. You can start these at any npc you can get Signet at in your city. More information can be found Here: Outpost Teleportation. You can only take up a supply mission if your nation owns that outpost this week. Check what you own by typing /rmap to access the region map.

You're level 10 or higher, time to party! Heading to dunes for the first time is not an easy task. It's a long run from any city, there's aggro along the way, and unfamiliar terrain. Be sure that you stop by the big white spire (Crag) on your way to get the tele crystal so whms can teleport you to it later. Picking up a stack of Silent Oil and Prism Powder along the way will make the run a lot easier as they'll allow you to avoid detection from monsters for some time.

Each crag has three platforms you can run up to, two of them are destroyed and lead to other areas. Only one has the tele-crystal that you're looking for. If you're having trouble targeting it because people are afk on it, hit F8 to target the nearest npc.

A stack of Silent Oil and Prism Powder. Food for your job (More on this below). Any new weapons or spells you'll need when you level up. If inventory is an issue you can put items in your Mog Safe in town and access them from the Moogles in Selbina (The town connected to the dunes).

No. It is by far the most popular route but it isn't a requirement. There are equally good/better camps in Buburimu Peninsula for people from WIndurst, and duo or trio options can work up to level 15ish in the zones where the crags are.

The traditional party setup for dunes is 2-3 provokers, 1-2 healers, and 1-2 supports like Bard or Corsair. If you want to just put your flag up and wait for an invite, type /inv to put your flag up. You can edit your search comment via the main menu to advertise yourself. For Example: 'New player looking for party, I have food and gear for when I level.'

It is much faster to build a party and you can ask people you've invited for insight on who/what jobs to invite. Typing /sea all inv will show you everyone on the server who has their party flag up, you can narrow down the levels by typing /sea all inv 10-50 for example which will show players level 10 through 50.
