Hello Everyone,

My name is Rio Waller and I teach CIT (Computer Information Technology) at Fresno City College in centra California.  I teach both F2F (Face to Face) and online modality basic computer concepts and web development and use many Google products in my courses.  (etc, Google Docs, WebMasters tools, Google Analytics, Google API's)

I would like to help built this community and would be willing to do some footwork to help bring in new members and/or start discussions about how we might leverage the Google infrastructure to give our students skills and experiences to help them become better digital citizens and content builders.

This semester I have an online course in creating websites that covers many basic concepts of website creation and would love to invite anyone interesting in viewing my course in our CMS system (Blackboard) or if you want I could share my course concepts here, just let me know if you are interested.

This message is also to see how many are actually checking into this group, so even if you are not interested in knowing more about my course, let me know who you are and what type of content/discussion you would like to see here.

I am totally game for that.  We too teach F2F and Online using both Google Hangouts as well as hardware solutions from Polycom.  It would be awesome to come up with some master listing service for courses being taught, times, etc... and allow students and teachers to teamup and access available resources.

Thanks Jason!

I have tried to get my online students to use hangout for my office hours...but have not been successful yet!

Ok..so on the master listing service for the course, let me understand your need/interest here.  Since there are many different folks on this list would you want courses they all offer and if so how would we use this info?  Now I can setup a Google form to capture the data, I just want to think about how we would use it?

Like I know there are open source courses at different locations and because mine is behind a CMS (Blackboard) opening it up would require a login...so I'm not sure to share my course setup...but may that's what I can use a page on this group to accomplish!  Just thinking out loud!

Thanks for your interest!

It would be great to just see a listing of all courses offered by instructors.  That way we could peruse the list and if we see something that might fit our situation we could individually make the contact to set something up.  We could also leverage a scheduling system to put out announcements of presentations/lessons that people would be offered over hangouts.  I have found that for the most part, lack of participation in what we do is due to the lack of knowledge that the resource is available.

Check out the Course Catalog on the site. I'd love to list everyone's classes there.

The organization is pretty basic for now, since there were only a few dozen courses listed. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on better layout and information architecture.

Shannon,

I took a few mins and looked around this site and this looking like a good start!  As one would except, there are varying levels of course materials (syllabus, assignment, projects and lectures), do you keep this list updated?  If so how do you get the updates?

Rio :)

Mamadou,

Well it depends on what you are trying to accomplish, right now we are discussing publishing a list of courses offered.  But I totally understand the amount of work it takes to get classes up and running. Teaching at a Community College I have to do it ALL myself, course development, course management, student management, grading and the list goes on!

So of course I have (like we all do) limited time resources, but sometimes all we need is to just discuss the issues we are facing and get input from folks that have been there.  This is my hope for building this community, we learn from each other!

Max,

Oh good!  Because I'm new here and I'm not sure what each one of us does, can you tell me what your game for?

Maybe we can each do an "About ME" post so that we all get to know each other, kinda a virtual social hour, or maybe we can do a hangout!!!  WHO's up for that!!??

Rio :)

Hello everyone!

I teach Android programming at Fresno City College in California.  I have been part of the Computer Information Technology (CIT) department’s faculty for the past eight years.  We recently created a mobile application program and I taught our first Android programming class over the Summer 2011 term and am currently teaching a traditional (face-to-face) Android class.  I also use Google App Engine and Android in another online class (Server-Side Scripting).

This online community is a great opportunity to meet other instructors involved with Google technologies and share classroom experiences.  I am looking forward to learning and sharing the best instructional techniques for Android programming.

Thank you for this group!

Howdy Folks,

I teach Web and Mobile App programming at Twin Falls High School and adjunct for The College of Southern Idaho.  I also own and operate Advanced Technology Solutions, Inc. where we focus primarily on web and mobile app dev, but throw some system development and administration in here and there.  Most of the high school courses I teach provide college credit to the students.  The course sequence is as follows...

1. HTML/CSS
2. Programming Fund with JavaScript
3. Native Mobile App Development with HTML5 and PhoneGap
4. Web App Development with PHP/MySQL
5. Native Android Dev with Java

We are planning to include the AP Computer Science course for the 2013-2014 school year.  I manage the Southern Idaho Google Developers Group (formerly GTUG) and we really push the students at the high school and college level to get involved in the dev camps and other events we put on.  It has created an amazing transformation in the students who attend.  The level of confidence in their technical skills goes through the roof.

I would really like to branch out and partner with other instructors and classes that focus on similar technologies to share lectures, collaborate on projects and possibly even create some competitive events for the students.  We can use Google Hangouts or a hardware solution for video collaboration.  I have a Polycom HDX8000 unit in my classroom for multi-point video collaboration.

So this is mostly for techies?  I'm interested in applying Google apps for other classes, such as an English class or any other class that can be hybridized, so I'd love to sit in workshops or classes that cover how to apply Google apps. However, I'm interested in taking some of these classes, not as a programmer or engineer, but as a laymen who would facilitate workshops for the lay student body.
