Google Code University will be retired on and after jan 1 2013. so will all the materials be moved here?

Thanks for digging that up.

We went through everything on code/edu and ported over anything that was out of date. The mapreduce class is WAY outdated. We're trying to contact everyone who originally submitted the outdated courses, and see if there's an update. If there is, we'll add it on the University Consortium site.

Google Code University will be retired after 2012, does it mean the site will disappear, or it just means no more updates?

 

If it means the site will not be accessible after 2012, then the question becomes, where could we access the materials before it is ported to the University Consortium site, if ever.

 

Granted, the mapreduce class material is way outdated, but it is still relevent and valuable information.

Google Code University has a "Except as otherwise noted, the content of this page is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License." statement on every page. I haven't found any information on licensing on University Consortium materials, and each course seems to lead to a different site, some of which have license grants and some of which don't say anything about it. Do you have a similar policy in place here?

no we don't, and it's because much of GCU's content was hosted by Google while *none* of the GDUC content is hosted by us... we merely offlink to each respective content provider's site.

one requirement for us to list content is that it needs to have an open license, so you'd need to refer to each of the content owner pages to get their licensing information.

Hello Shannon,

I found some more material from Google Code University that hasn't been moved over to the new site. The Tools 101 topics (MySQL Database, Linux Basics in particular) from http://code.google.com/edu/tools101/index.html don't seem to have a new home yet.

I like using these materials in the courses that I teach and I hope there is a way they can get hosted at the new site.

It looks like some of the materials (C++ and Python programming) got moved to developers.google.com/edu - any chance the Tools 101 topics can find a new home there?

I think the problem is that the link to the content that is ported over isn't easily accessible or easy to search for if you are looking for the "old" content. If I had not read the posts here, wasn't curious and inclined I wouldn't have put the /edu behind https://developers.google.com to reach the "old" content. So far however there is only Python, C++ and Curriculum Search (which only returns a web search and not the original links). 

Which leads me to Sam Ng's question about the Google Code site and other questions. However I am going to ask the question differently than Sam. 

1. Will the site be moved in its entirety and for posterity under the new Google Code University site? -I understand the need to move forward but sometimes what used to work will still work. Plus the structure of the old site seems easier to navigate.

2. If Google doesn't want to host the content anymore could it be "given" to a willing party to host? -Not sure who that would be but sure someone would take it if there is an open source agreement. (I may have an idea or 2) 

3. Could content/website be packaged in a downloadable version so that those who want to can download and "host" the old material locally? -Sort like the way some PC manufacturers put there online resource manual on an install CD.

Like I said I understand the need to move forward but if something works and still works then why not keep it. Even if it is in closet down a back hallway to the never used wing of the building.

Hi Shannon, 

Infact Google Code University being retired is very disappointing to me since there are some very useful course materials I was actually taking and was in the middle of some. In particular I am talking about the following ones:

1. Web 2.0 Ajax programming
2. Web Security
3. Algorithms
4. CSS, HTML and JavaScript
   
5. HTML5
6. Java

Most of these would be still very useful and an idea is to make these available in some sort of Archives section.
