- An improved and dynamic Course submission
- An improved and dynamic gallery of Courses
- Links to your institution and personal G+ pages
- Badging on your G+ pages, identifying you as a University Consortium partner
- Device and project exchange

It's my pleasure to inform this group of a new resource for getting
students excited about Computer Science. For the last year, I've been
developing a wrapper around the AndEngine framework that makes game
development accessible to high school and non-CS college students. The
framework is in pure Java, but it is easy enough for any open-minded
student to use... with the exception of a few advanced features, games
can be written using only declarative code.
Since our wrapper was developed at Lehigh University, and it makes
AndEngine easier to use, we call it the AndEngine Lehigh Extension
(ALE). The main website for ALE is
http://code.google.com/p/andengine-lehigh-extension.
At the ALE site, you can find:
- Source code. The code consists of a demo game (65 levels, gradually
introducing a variety of topics, in a single file with as many comments
as code), as well as the whole ALE library (again, very heavily
commented). All in all, there are ~5K lines of code, and ~5.6K lines of
comments, so hopefully the code will be very accessible.
- Documentation and a tutorial. Every method in the API is documented,
and there is a gentle walkthrough of the demo game.
- A fully configured development environment (a VirtualBox VM). This
makes it easy for students to get started even if they do not know how
to configure Eclipse/Android SDK/Java.
At Lehigh, we used ALE last semester in an introductory (nonmajor)
course for 95 first-semester, first-year engineering students. We are
using it for a campus-wide mobile gaming competition this semester, and
have also begun to think about using it in some upper-level
undergraduate courses (the focus there is on software engineering issues
-- students modify ALE, rather than write games). It has helped us to
generate excitement about Computer Science, and also to forge new
relationships between the CS and Art departments. If you find ALE to be
a useful resource, please let me know!
