Hi, tom. There are tutorials on the
pygame.org web site that I highly
recommend as first steps. Next I'd personally recommend studying Retro
Game Library, a project on
pygame.org, and making a game with it--this
is the mini engine-like library which was the inspiration for
Gummworld2's design.
I think one could learn a lot by working a modest scale project to
completion. It opens the opportunity to work through complexity, and
learn more advanced programming patterns.
Sorry, I'm not familiar with pokemon games and the format of their game
data, and I don't know what is meant by a grassy patch.
