This stewardship effort is focused on species like Wilson’s Plovers and American Oystercatchers at at critical nesting sites along South Carolina’s coast, from April through August.
Trained volunteers monitor these species and educate beachgoers about how to safely use the beach and keep birds safe at the same time. No prior bird knowledge is required.

More About Volunteering
Shorebird Stewards enjoy watching the activity in the nesting colony and showing visitors newborn chicks.
We explain how even brief disturbances may cause parent birds to flush, exposing eggs and young to heat stress and predators.
Our stewards take this responsibility seriously, while also having fun fostering an appreciation for birds among local residents and visitors.
