Community Conversation with Alex Brown
Budget, LMO Taskforce, and Corridor Updates
Friday, June 12th- 5:00
*DIFFERENT LOCATION*
Jarvis Creek Park -100 Jarvis Park Rd, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926
Dear Island Neighbors,
I hope you’ll join me for our next Community Conversation on Friday, June 12th at 5:00 PM. Please note that we will be meeting at a different location this month: Jarvis Creek Park, 100 Jarvis Park Road.
There are a lot of discussions and decisions being made that will shape the future of Hilton Head Island, and I want to make sure you have the opportunity to hear the latest updates, ask questions, and share your thoughts. This Community Conversation will focus on three important topics: the Town’s upcoming budget, the continued work of the Land Management Ordinance Task Force, and needed improvements along the William Hilton Parkway corridor.
Town of Hilton Head Island Budget
Town Council will have its second reading next week on the budget for the next fiscal year. The revenue projections are strong, and we are not anticipating any increase in the millage rate for property taxes. In addition to funding for Town operations, this budget also supports additional stormwater projects and enhanced enforcement on short-term rentals.
Land Management Ordinance
Town staff and the LMO Task Force have been working on this important update for several months. I’ll report to you on their progress and the priority items in the LMO that are being considered. These include:
-
Recalibration of density, land uses, building height, buffers, and setbacks
- Stronger tree and wetland protection
-
Re-development opportunities and economic potential in Historic Gullah Neighborhoods
William Hilton Parkway Corridor Improvements
The approved plans for the bridges to Hilton Head Island do not include critically needed improvements for the corridor on our community’s side of the bridges. I’ll bring you up to date on the necessities in this area, including:
-
Increasing safety for pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles
- Minimizing right-of-way impact to adjacent property owners
- Providing economic opportunities in Stoney
Celebrate Juneteenth with Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park
After our Community Conversation, I invite you to continue the evening at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park for the Juneteenth Celebration Drum Circle. It is a powerful way to close the day in community while honoring the history, culture, and legacy of the place where freedom began. Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park continues to raise the bar each year with Juneteenth programming that is thoughtful, engaging, and deeply rooted in the history and culture that make this site such a treasured gem of our Island. I encourage you to take part in their Juneteenth programming throughout the week, including Thursday’s Campfire Conversations, Friday’s Children’s Drum Camp, Saturday’s Celebration featuring Stokley, and the 5K Run and Walk. They are also offering a Teen Archaeology Camp June 22-26. You can learn more about the programming here: exploremitchelville.org/juneteenth
Thanks for your interest in our Island’s future. As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.
