Subject: Tell your legislator to support guardrails for data centers!

Lawmakers in both the House and Senate have filed nine different bills this year addressing data center development issues. However, with only a few weeks left in the legislative session and no bills passed by either chamber, time is running out.

Your voice is crucial in ensuring lawmakers pass meaningful policy this year that effectively protects electric customers, local communities, and our state’s natural resources.

As major data centers continue to locate in South Carolina, where a single facility can use as much power as an entire city and hundreds of millions of gallons of water each year, we cannot afford to wait until next year to take action.

At CVSC, we believe fundamental data center safeguards should:

  • Protect environmentally sensitive areas from development
  • Ensure existing customers aren’t paying for data center electric needs
  • Standardize water-use reporting and transparency

With neighboring states already enacting meaningful data center guardrails this year, South Carolina cannot afford to ignore this issue. We’re working with legislators to implement these safeguards in ongoing policy discussions, but forward momentum is needed now.

Tell your lawmakers to pass meaningful data center safeguards this session!

Sincerely,

Erin Siebert
Energy Policy Manager
