Leather Technology
Leather has been used since early ages by man. Leather was not considered as famous as it is now , we use leather in all many of our day to day life like purses, clothes, shoes, accessories hence it has become a new stream. India has always been a good producer of leather products. Earlier leather training was difficult and harsh now but now as it has emerged as new field it has become much better and conditioned. Kanpur is hub of leather products in India. India has a large cattle population hence it has become a hub for leather products creating new job and fields
Leather Technology
Leather technologists are not only trained to work in industries they are required to invent better design and production ways to utilize leather
Production- Leather Technologist is required to have scientific knowledge to shape leather into products and so as to minimize waste and raw material. They also have to supervise the production process
Research and Quality control –Leather Technologist test the finished product in laboratories to verify the quality
Work Environment
Basically leather technologists works in Tanneries the conditions there are not so good as compared to other counterpart engineering fields but some modernized tanneries have very good facilities. They have to work on large machinery and handle a large workforce also they need to work in labs to test the quality
Personal Characteristics
The leather technologists need to be more skillful than other people because the place where he works requires more adaptability and problem solving skills. And also he has to play the role of a manger to handle a large workforce. Chemistry knowledge is also an added advantage.
Leather Technology Nature of Work Employment Avenues
India is the major producer of the Leather goods and produced leather. Leather Industries are located in Kanpur and neighbouring areas in South and around Chennai. Leather industries are gaining its importance day by day. With the increasing demand in Leather industries there is a need of Leather Technology Engineers. Leather technology is harsh and messy training which requires handling of murky raw hydes and skins of animals. The training may not be very glamorous but the trained technologists get jobs in prestigious firms, export houses and government organizations.
Nature of Work:
The work in Leather Industries is divided into 2 parts: processing of raw leather into finished leather for manufacturing industries and to design marketing and production of finished goods.
Leather Training
Leather is prepared in tanneries from animal hide and skin. The hides of cows, buffalo, goats, pigs, horses are processed for preparing leather to be used for the manufacture of a variety of products. After pretreatment or curing which involves removal of unwanted flesh, hair from the skin and curing with salt the skin is made ready for tanning. Tanning agents cement together the protein fibers in the skin, giving leather its unique flexibility and hard wearing qualities. Training process usually includes the teaching of all these tasks mentioned above and also takes care of finishing of leather products after the production.
Leather Technology
Leather technologists are trained to work in production, research and quality control, marketing and sales.
Work Environment:
Leather technologists work in tanneries. The work is practical and can be messy particularly at the stage of processing of the hides and skin. But after this messy part the technologist have to work in their office doing planning and marketing for the production.
Employment Avenues:
A leather technologist finds employment with industries which manufacture footwear, leather garments and leather products. There are bright prospects for entrepreneurship and self employment with our exports of leather finished goods overtaking traditional goods. Designers come from design schools or have special qualifications in the designing of footwear, leather garments and other products like ladies purses, brief cases and bags etc.
