After a deep conversation, Vasundhara undergoes a change of heart. As the rain stops, Raghuvaran takes Vasundhara to his home where they share a meal and Vasundhara bonds with the family. She announces that she will return VIP Constructions to Raghuvaran. The movie ends with Raghuvaran declaring that people consider him a villain but he, in fact, is a hero.

After their 2014 film, Velaiilla Pattadhari, Velraj and Dhanush worked on the production of Thangamagan (2015), which was initially widely reported to be a sequel to their previous film. During the production stages of the film, Dhanush denied that this was the case and confirmed it was a different script.[7] Later, in mid-2016, Dhanush's sister-in-law, Soundarya Rajinikanth agreed to terms with producer N. Ramasamy and Hema Rukmai to make a romantic drama film titled Nilavukku Enmel Ennadi Kobam and cast Dhanush in the lead role.[8][9] Despite negotiations with actresses including Sonam Kapoor, Kajal Aggarwal and Manjima Mohan, the project failed to materialise, and in a sudden turn of events, Dhanush revealed that he would instead collaborate with Soundarya for a sequel to his earlier film Velaiilla Pattadhari. The film was revealed to be co-produced by N. Ramasamy, while the latter would also write the script of the film. Sean Roldon was signed to replace Anirudh as the film's composer, while the theme music composed by Anirudh was retained in the new project.[10] During the launch event of the film, it was announced that Sameer Thahir would work as the cinematographer, while Prasanna GK would be the editor.[11] The film was originally shot in Tamil while certain scenes of Dhanush were additionally filmed in Telugu due to the success of Raghuvaran B Tech, the Telugu dubbed version of Velaiilla Pattadhari.[12] The film was also subsequently dubbed and released into Hindi as VIP 2 - Lalkar with Kajol dubbing for herself.[13]

Velraj and Dhanush had worked together on several projects including Aadukalam (2011) and 3 (2012) as cinematographer and lead actor respectively. During the production of those films, Dhanush suggested Velraj to make his debut as a director and promised to play the lead role.[4] After Velraj showed Dhanush the film's script, Dhanush agreed to play the lead role as well as produce the film. In July 2013, Dhanush confirmed his collaboration with Velraj, whilst also confirming the inclusion of Amala Paul as the female lead and Anirudh Ravichander as the music director.[5] The title of the film, Velaiilla Pattadhari was unveiled on 15 August 2013. After the title launch, Dhanush confirmed that filming would start on 20 August 2013.[6]

Actress Surbhi began filming her scenes in early March 2014.[18] Hrishikesh, who plays Karthik, Raghuvaran's sibling, received an SMS from Dhanush's production office, which asked him to audition for the role. He was selected after his screen test ended successfully.[19] Amitash Pradhan played the main antagonist, Arun Subramaniam. He was recruited from the Anupam Kher Acting School. In an interview with Gulf News, Amitash described his character to be not the "stereotypical villain" often seen in Tamil cinema, and that his character was more cunning.[20]

Velaiilla Pattadhari raises the issue of unemployed graduates in society.[26] Dhanush's character, Raghuvaran, represented the unemployed graduate who is waiting to move up the social ladder.[27] One scene shows Raghuvaran delivering a speech about the difficulties in finishing an engineering degree only to remain jobless, with some of them having to take jobs not related to their fields to make a living.[26] Dhanush's characterisation was similar to his characters from his previous films like Polladhavan (2007), Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008) and Padikkadavan (2009).[28] Both Baradwaj Rangan of The Hindu and M. Suganth of The Times of India compare Dhanush's and Amitash's characters and their encounters with each other to those that took place between the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah, David and the Philistine warrior, Goliath.[29][30]

The film's soundtrack and score were composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The album, containing eight tracks, was initially scheduled to be released in January 2014, but the release was brought forward to 14 February 2014, to add two additional songs.[33] The team also recorded a track described as a "lilting melody" between Dhanush and singer S. Janaki in October 2013.[34] Anirudh promoted the album on Sun Music a week before the film's release.[35] The track list was released on 10 February 2014.[36] The album was launched at the Suryan FM 93.5 radio station with Dhanush, Amala Paul and Anirudh Ravichander in attendance.[37] The album received positive response from critics. The songs "Velaiilla Pattadhari", "Poo Indru Neeyaga", "What a Karuvad" and "Udhungada Sangu" topped the Radio Mirchi South charts for 31 weeks.[38]

The official first look poster of Velaiilla Pattadhari was released by Dhanush through his official Twitter account on 24 December 2013.[44] The teaser of the film was uploaded on YouTube on 9 February 2014.[45] The official trailer of the film was released on 18 June 2014 on YouTube, and trended on social networking sites following its release,[46] reaching 2 million views in two weeks.[47]

Oneindia Entertainment gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and stated that "Velayilla Pattathari [sic] is a perfect entertainer for Dhanush's fans".[58] S. Saraswathi of Rediff gave the film 3 stars out of 5 and concluded, "Velaiyilla Pattathari [sic] is two hours of pure entertainment, definitely worth a watch".[59] Haricharan Pudipeddi of IANS gave the film 3 stars out 5 and stated, "While VIP fortifies Dhanush's heroism in a tailor-made role which he comfortably pulls off, it also achieves so many things right as a commercial film and that's what works in its favour. Dhanush reinforces he's still cut out for commercial cinema with Velaiyilla Pattathari [sic]".[26]

In November 2016, Dhanush announced that he would act in the sequel of the film to be directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth and produced by S. Thanu.[68] Filming for the sequel began on 15 December 2016 with actress Kajol being drafted to play "a prominent role" marking her comeback to Tamil films since Minsara Kanavu (1997). Paul and Samuthirakani reprised their roles from Velaiilla Pattadhari.[69] The sequel was released on 11 August 2017.[70]

For a while, Velayilla Pattathari plays like a Selvaraghavan movie you can take your mother (and her mother) to.

Ha, Ha, LOL. Great review. but selvaragavan has been moving away from this obsessed stalker story in last couple of films, so pls cut him some slack!.

Aravindan: I really really liked the film till that breakdown scene. The roof tent was a brilliant touch. Then, of course, as you say, shabba. But still, several notches about the Veeram/Jilla levels of shabba.

Watched VIP last night, Both halves were different as chalk and cheese. First half reminded me of other Dhanush movies I have seen (The kinda families portrayed in Polladhavan, Yaradi Nee Mohini so on). Second half was the kind of Tamil movies that I stay away from. He probably was channelizing his superstardom. I have this theory that Dhanush the actor and Dhanush the star are completely different entities and at times at least in this movie he is winning over a villain just coz it was meant to be like that in the script.

Velaiyilla Pattathari comprises two distinct films. The first half is strong, combining a realistic portrayal of a jobless man after graduation with an incredibly engaging family drama. While the second half is enjoyable and of high quality, it did get a bit too dramatic at times. Overall though, this is a strong punch film that is a lot of fun to watch.

So, when Raghuvaran does land a job he fancies, and presents his first construction project to his dad, we get a moment where they both look at each other, eye-to-eye, and Raghuvaran turns to leave but his father gives his hand out for a sincere shake. Raghuvaran has grown out of his self-loathing and grown more confident. He has broken the vicious cycle, to take up big responsibilities like a government slum clearance project which everyone from the comical Vivekh'scharacter to the "amul baby" (read: equally amusing) upper class (and caste?) Amitash's villain.

Velaiilla Pattathari, in many ways is very similar to Rocky (yeah, I am a sucker for films about underdogs). Especially, the way it is structured. Both the films have 'paavam' (innocent) losers as its central character, both have pretty and empathetic love interests, both get dissed by those around them, a coach in one and a dad in another. But most importantly, both films take their time to make us empathetic towards the protagonists before throttling into the main conflict. Both these films don't really introduce their respective central conflicts almost until the half-way mark. In Rocky it is around the 56th minute of 119-minute long film, the proposition of fighting Apollo Creed is brought to Rocky Balboa. In VIP, it is after 72 minutes out of the 133 minutes, that the construction project is handed over to Raghuvaran to lead, and meeting Amitash comes even later. And when it finally does, Dhanush transforms from the actor to the star, unlike Sylvester Stallone, maybe because Dhanush can afford to do that and there is a 'mass' wanting it from him.
