The Machine Tool Technology program is designed to provide the student with the ability to work as a machine tool operator, machinist, or related occupation that requires skill in machining metal with such machines as milling machines, lathes, grinders, drill presses, CNC machinery, EDM machinery including the ability to interpret part prints and use precision measuring tools.

The course in machine shop is designed to give students experience on a variety of machine tools similar to those on which they will work after graduation. Instruction is given in related blueprint reading and mathematics, precision measuring, and such basic metallurgy as properties of metals, their workable characteristics, best treatment of metals, and relative hardness.
Program DescriptionThe Machinist/CNC Technology program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to gain employment in the manufacturing industry. The first year of the program will focus on skills used in a modern machine shop: machine shop math, blueprint reading, and conventional machine tool theory and lab. The last year offers advanced conventional machining and specialized training in CNC theory with introduction to CAD/CAM and procedures in quality control.
Each required course for graduation must be completed with a grade of 2.0 or higher before proceeding to the next quarter.
Career OpportunitiesMost CNC machinists work in small machining shops or in manufacturing firms that produce durable goods such as metalworking and industrial machinery, aircraft parts, medical equipment, motor vehicles, or parts and components for manufactured products.

The Machinist sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, applies knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques in the most cost effective manner possible with the machine tools, equipment and instructions provided.
The program, a paid four-year combination work/study apprenticeship, encompasses seven fields of study, including aircraft electrician, electronics mechanic, machinist, sheet metal mechanic, painter, aircraft mechanic and pneudraulics mechanic. FRCSE not only provides each student's tuition and fees, but pays a competitive hourly wage and provides benefits throughout the program.
