In my case the message was coming up on a single element of the document and was connected with the template I was using. I was trying to remove a field referring to the manager of the project from a single page of the document. When I would highlight and press "delete" I would see the message "this-modification-is-not-allowed-because-the-selection-is-locked".

I downloaded a 2007 MIcrosoft Word Office and Student trial a couple of weeks ago, and today, it said "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked". Luckily I had a different computer which I could do my work on. I tried following the steps but almost every command was unavailable (the names were grey and i couldnt click on them). I cant click protect document or anything.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else here, but I retained my office word 2007 with the hack thats going around. But a week later, I got "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked'. I don't want to go out and buy it, so what will the activation do?

What happened to me was I entered my Product Key, and it said "activated", then I tried typing and it said "This modification is not allowed because the section is locked" so then I was a bit annoyed, so then I went to Word Options > Resources > activate Microsoft Office, then I put the Product Key in again - it came up with "activated". Then this morning I came back on, opened Microsoft Office, then something came up - "How would you like to complete activating your software?" then there were two options - "Activate by internet (Recommended)" and "Activate by phone". I chose "Activate by internet (Recommended)" and it activated once I set up my internet. Then I closed down Microsoft Word 2007, and set it up again - It works!
