Inthe hand press period (up to about 1820) books were manufactured by printing text on both sides of a full sheet of paper and then folding the paper one or more times into a group of leaves or gathering. The binder would sew the gatherings (sometimes also called signatures) through their inner hinges and attached to cords in the spine to form the book block. Before the covers were bound to the book, the block of text pages was sometimes trimmed along the three unbound edges to open the folds of the paper and to produce smooth edges for the book. When the leaves were not trimmed, the reader would have to cut open the leaf edges using a knife.

In book construction, Japan uses a mixture of ISO A-series, JIS B-series, and several traditional Japanese paper sizes. A- and B-series signatures are folded from a sheet slightly larger than ISO A1 and JIS B1, respectively, then trimmed to size. The most commonly encountered sizes are listed below.

According to the 2003 Guinness World Records, the largest book in the world was Bhutan: A Visual Odyssey Across the Last Himalayan Kingdom by Michael Hawley. Its size is 1.5 m 2.1 m (5 ft 7 ft).[13]

A couple of years ago, I found a little problem about printing a document to a Legal size of paper because, for instance, in Microsoft Office (any versions) I can choose the Legal paper size if I desire a long bond paper but using this paper size will not fit our local version of long size of paper. In United States and or other similar countries Legal paper size is defined as 8.5 x 14 inches but in my country, Philippines, we are oriented by paper suppliers that Legal size has the dimension of 8.5 x 13 inches. According to my research the 8.5 x 13 inches is called Folio paper size or German Legal Fanfold; therefore Legal and Folio paper size are two different sizes. I can see the German Legal Fanfold in my print server properties that has the same dimension of 8.5 x 13 inches but I have no idea why it is not visible to Microsoft Office.

Step 1: Locate the Print Server Properties. Go to Start Menu and at the right side find Devices and Printers. When you get to Devices and Printers, click your default printer installed in your system. After selecting a printer driver, the additional three or more options will show up at the top of Devices and Printers window and look below the address bar. In short, you will be able to see the Print Server Properties when your printer driver is selected. Click the Print Server Properties to show its settings.

Note: For HP and Epson this tip might not work 100% because each printer has different configuration. Perhaps, I will update this post in the near future. Anyway hope you find this helpful.

Before you print something you click first the printer properties then click document size, there are many sizes of paper there, next click the User defined in there you type the size you want to like 8.5 x 13 then click ok then you print it .

The glossary is adapted from the following sources: American Historical Print Collectors Society "Dictionary of Terms" (www.ahpcs.org); Glaister, Encyclopedia of the Book. Second Edition. Oak Knoll Press & The British Library, 1979; International Fine Print Dealers Assn. "What is a Print" (www.ifpda.org).

la poupe print: A print created when colored ink is applied directly into a separate area of a plate's surface and worked into the appropriate area of the design using cotton daubs called dollies, or in French, poupe.

Antique print: All prints printed and published before 1900 are considered antique prints. A modern reproduction of an old print is not itself an antique. The cut-off date of 1900 is not firmly fixed, however, and in many circumstances original prints made before World War II are also considered to be antiques.

Aquatint: An etching process in which the artist is concerned with tone rather than line. For this technique, a plate is covered with particles of acid-resistant material such as resin and heated to make the particles stick. The treated plate is then placed in an acid bath, which bites into the copper that is exposed between grains of resin, yielding a composition marked by texture and tone.

Chine appliqu (chine coll) print: A chine appliqu or chine coll is a print in which the image is impressed onto a thin sheet of paper, originally China paper, which is backed by a stronger, thicker sheet. China paper takes an intaglio impression more easily than regular paper, so chine appliqu prints generally show a richer impression than standard prints. Proof prints are often done as chine appliqus.

Edition: An edition of a print includes all the impressions published at the same time or as part of the same publishing event. A first edition print is one which was issued with the first published group of impressions. First edition prints are sometimes pre-dated by a proof edition. Editions of a print should be distinguished from states of a print. There can be several states of a print from the same edition, and there can be several editions of a print all with the same state.
