My kids and I were puzzled as to why we were finding dead (mauled)
gophers out in the lawn...inside the fenced 2.5 acre compound. I just
drove in and hoppedout of the SUV to notice my wandering Game Fowl hen
who is brooding the goslings she hatched a few days ago. Well...it
turns out that she hunts gophers...LOL Apparently the little gophers
are viewed as a threat to her babies. She goes after the gophers like
a maniac. She'll spot one 50 ft away and run up to it and jump on it
and peck it and scratch it till its dead. It sorta funny but
gruesome. Gives one an idea of how miserable it would be to get
caught by a dinosaur in Jurassic Park.

This particular Game Fowl hen has spurs on both legs...just like the
cocks have. Her spurs are not quite as large as cock has...but she's
a deadly force to be reckoned with by other than humans. Our puppy
got a few lessons on chick proximity last summer. I have to be
careful when I'm feeding her goslings. She does not allow me to get
within a couple feet before she's all puffed up and in a fighting
mood. I know better than to make any sudden gestures when she's ready
to defend or offend...I've dealt with a few who go right at your legs
with little notice. They tend to become more docile as the chicks
become accustomed to me and she with me and them.

My Game Fowl hen with the pack of goslings as her brood is plain
nuts. Today I found another gopher carcass....we call them Sage Rats
here in Moxee. She sees one on the lawn and makes a beeline to it,
jumps on it and pecks till they're dead. So far...5 gopher carcasses

Score

Game Fowl hen winning Gophers -5

Peeps,

Isn't that a riot...a gopher hunting chicken. She works better than
my rat traps.
