Feel the energy of hundreds of talented student performers as they share highlights from their award-winning school musicals at the 2024 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase.

Iowa PBS is proud to present an exclusive livestream of the full event on iowapbs.org on Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m. A 2-hour highlights special will air Tuesday, July 9 at 8 p.m. and be rebroadcast Sunday, July 14 at 4 p.m. The special will also be available for a limited time for on-demand streaming on iowapbs.org and the PBS App.

Throughout the school year, workshops led by theater professionals help students grow. While some sessions focus on performance skills, others focus on technical areas such as lighting design, scenic design, and stage management. Many opportunities connect students directly with Broadway professionals.

Select participating musical productions receive a professional review. Panels of performing arts educators and professionals (adjudicators) attend exhibiting schools' musicals and provide feedback on individual actors' performances, orchestra, set, lighting, costumes and more. Teachers and students use these insights to make their next show even stronger. Schools participating year over year have seen dramatic transformations in skill, student enthusiasm, and community support.

In addition to its statewide broadcast, Iowa PBS .1 is available to livestream on iowapbs.org/watch, pbs.org/livestream, the PBS App, Local Now, YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV. Iowa PBS programs, behind-the-scenes extras and more can be enjoyed on iowapbs.org, Facebook and YouTube. Viewers can also stream their favorite shows on demand using the PBS App, available on iOS, Android and many streaming devices.

You wonder how the rest of these high school productions felt about this one insanely talented performer. Like, were they so good that it was distracting? Was there resentment? Is there such a thing as too good?

The ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Awards recognizes and celebrates Valley high school students and faculty that produce musical theatre programs. Over the school year, schools are adjudicated in 14 performance and tech categories. The ASU Gammage HSMTA is a regional program of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, known as The Jimmy Awards.

Applications for adjudicators for the 2018-2019 High School Musical Theatre Awards program are now open and will close on September 1, 2018. Ideal applicants would have an extensive background in musical theatre at the high school level. Applicants will be notified by September 15, 2018, if they are selected to be one of the 2018-2019 ASU Gammage HSMTA adjudicators. Adjudicators will receive a small stipend per adjudication.

Tonight, after a three-year pandemic pause, theater kids and their fans and families will gather to find out who is nominated for the 22nd Metro Awards, honoring high school musicals from the Lower Hudson Valley and Bergen County in New Jersey.

It all takes place at 7:30 p.m., on our livestream, exclusively on lohud.com and northjersey.com, from the stage of Tarrytown Music Hall, the Metros' new venue. There's even talk of special guests joining the livestream, with major announcements.

There will be nominees in 35 categories, everything from lobby display to outstanding overall production. Winners will be announced Monday, June 12, the night after Broadway bestows its Tony Awards. This year, 56 schools are taking part: 25 from Westchester, 23 from Bergen, five from Rockland and three from Putnam.

Viewing parties: The livestream on lohud.com has inspired viewing parties, with theater kids huddling to watch on the big screen. But everyone at the party also uses their own devices to watch along, to register their support.

The menu: Tradition holds that casts and crew gather around pizza, wings and paninis to find out who'll be nominated. Extra points (and possible livestream shoutouts) are given to those whose feasts are show-specific.

I'll be joined on the stage at the Music Hall by Metros producers Blake Spence and Jordan Singer. Metros producer emerita Danielle Rudess, of Nyack's Helen Hayes Youth Theatre, will be just off-camera.

Singer, who coordinates after-school theater programs across Westchester for KJK Productions, has been a Metros judge for years, and coordinated the judges this year. Spence teaches at Lyndhurst High School in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and is the artistic director of theater at Madison High School in Morris County.

The Jimmy Awards/The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) is an advanced program and talent showcase that celebrates high school students from across the country and features dynamic ensemble and solo performances. The NHSMTA program impacts more than 140,000 students who participate in high school musical theatre competitions each year, sponsored by presenters of Touring Broadway productions throughout the United States.

As presented by the Broadway League Foundation, the program has, in past years, invited two nominees from each of these regional ceremonies to New York City to participate in a theatre intensive including coaching and rehearsals with Broadway professionals in preparation for a one-night-only talent showcase on a Broadway stage. The program has been the catalyst for more than $4,000,000 in educational scholarships to date, and several student participants have already been cast in Broadway, Touring and West End productions.

The Rising Star Awards also provide a variety of Scholarship Opportunities for participating high school seniors. Paper Mill Playhouse offers seven $1,000 cash awards to outstanding individual students participating in entered Rising Star Award productions, and who plan to continue studying theatre or technical theatre in college.

Will Paper Mill Playhouse accept a school purchase order or voucher for the application fee?
Yes, provided the forms arrive at Paper Mill Playhouse within ten business days of your confirmation email.

What categories will be adjudicated?
Each school receiving in person adjudication will be scored in the following categories:
Direction, Choreography, Music Direction, Orchestra, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Hair and Make Up Design, Chorus, Lead Performance in a Female Identified Role, Lead Performance in a Male Identified Role, Supporting Performance in a Male Identified Role, Supporting Performance in a Female Identified Role, Featured Performer, Ensemble Member*, and Ensemble Group.

Auxiliary Award categories are open to schools being adjudicated. Those categories are: Outstanding Educator, Educational Impact Award, Theater for Everyone Inclusion and Access Award, Student Achievement Awards, and Senior Scholarships.

How will schools be adjudicated?
Evaluators will utilize the Standards of Excellence and Performance Response Forms. Samples of these forms will be made available to schools prior to the first production weekend.

o The performance material must be a song in the musical theatre style from a published musical or an original work. We encourage students to use story driven material that shows off both acting and singing abilities equally. While the performance may include choreography, the emphasis of evaluation is on acting and singing.
o The submission must be a solo performance in which the performer performs a piece that is intended as a solo moment or individual song.
o The submission must not exceed 2 minutes.

How does a school receive a final nomination in consideration for an award?
All submissions will be reviewed by members of the Paper Mill Nomination Committee and evaluated using our Standards of Excellence Rubric and Response Form. A sample of these forms will be advanced to schools following registration. The Nomination Committee will utilize these scores and comments to discuss and determine nominees.
