Zazen, lectures, services and ceremonies at San Francisco Zen Center are signaled by traditional Japanese temple bells and drums. Click on the links below to listen to the instruments and chants. Audio files will open in a new browser window.

Once the show started, a narration played over the speakers introducing visitors to the story of Philae Temple. Told as a conversation between characters related to the temple, we learned about the origins of Philae and the fascinating legends of the god Osiris and goddess Isis. As the story played, the colour of light on the pylon sometimes changed and the colonnade was lit up.

When the introduction to the temple was complete, the rope blocking access to the courtyard was removed and the crowd was told to walk to the second pylon in the forecourt. Here we listened to another part of the story while looking at the iconography carved onto the facade. My favourites were the larger-than-life images of Hathor and Horus.

At the end of the show, everyone was directed to the boat landing for the return trip to the mainland. I would have loved some time after the show to explore Philae Temple at night, but unfortunately, you have to stick to the approved circuit during the show only.

So is the Philae Temple light show worth it? I thought it was, even though I already visited the temple in the daytime. I liked the Philae light show more than the Karnak Temple Sound and Light Show in Luxor because all the buildings were lit up the entire time and the narration was better quality. I do wish there were more colour-changing lights though.

Show Schedule & Languages: The Philae Temple light show runs every day of the week and there are typically two shows each night. According to the official website, the show is presented over the speakers in different languages on different nights. I believe there are audio guides and headphones available if you need a different language. You can confirm show times and languages here.

The most convenient way to visit the Philae light show is by booking a package deal from a tour operator that includes transportation from Aswan, hotel pick up and drop off, the boat ride to the island, and admission tickets to the show. Here is a trusted site where you can book an excursion to the Philae Temple Sound and Light Show.

In this article I want to go into some detail about why and how I joined this project, and my thought processes behind my approach to creating my musical contribution to it. I will follow this outline:

Having chosen which source material to use, but before starting to work on my composition, I wanted to look more closely at where the gong samples were recorded: Ekoji temple, belonging to the Jōdo Buddhism Nishiyama Zenrinji School.

It is plain from the foregoing that the foundational tenets of Buddhism are completely out of bounds for me. For example as espoused by the Pure Land School above: relying on the Amitabha Buddha, deep belief in his mercy, praising the joyful Buddha, living life according to the teachings of the Buddha. This is why I am not willing or able to partake in Buddhist rituals or ceremonies or prayers in any way, and why I had to be careful in how I joined this project so that I am not seen to be endorsing those beliefs.

But then what about the practical goals and values of Buddhism? For example from above again: living in harmony with people and purifying society. I want those things too! But there are crucial questions I have to ask:

And so the path to purity, harmony, and enlightenment looks very different for me as a Christian when compared to Buddhist teachings. There is some common ground in terminology in goals, but the content and form is fundamentally different.

Finally, then, what about using the sounds and instruments used in Buddhist ceremonies? Is it possible to extract those from their temple context? It would certainly be difficult to do so with the chants and songs, but what about the gongs that I did incorporate? The next section explains a bit more, but again some underlying principles first. The following verses from the Bible offer some practical instruction on the issue of whether the early Christians should eat meat that had been offered to idols; you will notice that this issue was also referred to above in the first point, 1 Corinthians 8:4-6, taken from the same letter as here:

I need to point out that the gong sounds that I used were recorded in a non-ritual context, intentionally recorded for their sonic value and not as part of any ceremony. Though they have their function within the temple, I believe that I can receive them with thankfulness and re-orient their function in a way that glorifies God. I could well have declined joining this project on the grounds of conscience, but I figured that there was a greater opportunity to serve and love through joining. I hope to seek the good of others by offering a different perspective, by sharing a Biblical approach to sound and music, and by contributing music that might open up some new avenues of listening and thinking.

So all in all I guess my take on the project is more reflective than preservative. I went through a process of reflecting on these issues and on the meaning of the sounds in themselves, and I wanted to capture and present my reflections in musical as well as word form. I have no stake in wanting to preserve the religious trappings of temple music. And instead of seeking to embody the cultural values that these instruments came from, I tried to push conceptually into re-embodying territory. More on what I mean by this below.

Additional notes: the processes and modules I used involved looping and manipulating particles and chunks of the gong samples. In a very real and literal sense, then, this was an act of preserving and reflecting on those sounds technologically, as well as metaphorically.

Psychedelic music. Why be so forward and diligent on categorizing music? Quite simply because we want to and our intentions are to make what we believe to be psychedelic music. What is psychedelic music? Ask different people and you'll almost always get a different answer, but as far as we're concerned it's music that challenges and titillates the senses, much like psychedelic drugs do (although music doesn't have the sheer force of these aforementioned substances). Psychedelic music is the most broad of all genres of music as it covers a vast catalog of styles and influences and assimilates it into one package for your aural delight, and while it may lack the "sheer force" described above, it offers a glimpse into the heady world of altered consciousness.
Which brings us to another point. We could go on for quite some time on the virtues of psychoactive substances, but that would take days and more paper than this insert will hold. What we can say is that this music, particularly on this LP is intended to be listened to under the influence of a mind altering substance. More specifically, the preferred substance being LSD. Now look out - we're not advocating the irresponsible use of psychoactive drugs mind you! Rather, we advocate the religious experience of enjoying this music in the comfort of your temple (home) and with your religious congregation (family, close friends, spouse). "Religious" too strong a word for this scene? Nope. To those that know, music can be a very spiritual and cosmic experience if you open yourself up to it and give it the attention it deserves. Psychedelics merely enhance this process 1000 fold. Sound becomes a physical reality and at times an abstract amalgamation of otherworld movements and vibrations. You begin to understand the true nature of music, the pipes of Pan, the Devil's tool, and god's way of creating joy. Insanity and genius, Hellish tribulation and blissful elation. A paradox so beautifully crafted by "turned on" musicians and artists in an effort to turn on their fellow brethren.
We should make it clear that while recommended to be listened to in this state it is not by any means necessary to enjoy the music on a more "reality based" level. The music is designed for maximum enjoyment either in or out of the psychoactive state of mind. And of course we don't want to advocate breaking the law in any way so check your local laws to make sure that whatever substance you may imbibe in is legal in your country and/or planet.
Please enjoy your trip and don't forget to leave your luggage behind as you won't be needing it on this voyage. Above all, respect and love one another. Start with the music.
