Hi ya Sabrina,
I'll tell ya a couple of really funny stories about my last guide dog Vic.
He really was a strong character.
I remember when I first had him, this was even before I actually qualified
with him. I was sat in a coffee shop with my GDMI talking over what we'd
just done when a young boy of around 7 came in, walked past the dog and
jumped onto his tail. Vic was well out of the way and under the table but
he shot round and gave the boy a huge bark. The mother, obviously seeing
what happened pulled the boy away but didn't offer any apology nor did she
tell the boy off really. Several weeks went past and I was stood outside
the main building of our local college campus where I was doing a course and
a young boy and his mother walked past. Now I didn't have enouggh vision to
recognise them but I'm sure it was the same child and mother from the coffee
shop because as soon as Vic saw them, he made a beeline for the boy barking
and growling. I had his lead of course but the couple scuttled away! Haha!
Another story was when I was at a technology show in London and I tried out
a seated gyroscope in the lobby. First of all I need to explain that Vic
and I formed an extremely strong bond and he never liked me out of his
sight. A friend was holding Vic at the time I was on the machine and he got
really really excited and anxious, Vic that is, not my friend haha, and he
had a great big wee all over the lobby floor!
Another classic tale was when I flew over from Cardiff to Belfast. Going
through security, my ex wife held onto Vic for me while I got frisked. Vic
really didn't like this and started barking and growling. He broke his grip
from my ex wife and jumped up at the security officer, wrapping his mouth
round his arm and pulling it from me. He didn't bite him but he sure as
hell meant business!
Sadly Vic is up in the great kennel in the sky now but I'll always have fond
memories of him. My new dog, Boots is a completely different character but
just as funny!
