Hi Terry,
they only use labradors, golden retrievers, labradoodles, german shepherds
and the lab retrievers. They have experimented with all sorts of different
breeds and have found these are the best when it comes to stamina and
intelligence.
Mel, we have more than one guide dog school in the Uk but they have ben
rebranded into regional training centres. So for example where I currently
live in Brighton our regional training centre is Maidstone in Kent. They
cover Kent, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove. We do have an outreach
office in Brighton where 2 GDMI's are based so as to cover a wider area
across Sussex.
Reading for example will cover West Sussex and Surrey. Of course London has
to be different and be a whole centre on their own. :)
We have the national breeding centre based in Lemmington Spa where all our
dogs are bred and born although saying that there are some brood bitches who
do give birth at home.
Scotland have their own training centres like Atherton and Forfar and
Northern Ireland is now catching up with their own training centre in
Belfast.
With all this in mind they do train at home if the client requests it or it
is half hotel and half house training. The nice thing about Guide Dogs here
in the Uk is that you are totally supported no matter what the problem or
age of the dog.
Terry keep in mind that Northern Ireland is part of the UK whereas the
Republic of Ireland is a total country on it's own and it is also known as
southern Ireland or Eire.
Hope that helps.
