Hi all,
I'm a first tine guide dog owner here in the UK.
My beautiful boy is called Thomas and he is a lab retriever. He's 8 and a half years old now and has been my total life changer and freedom giver.
He's also my best friend and companion.
Thanks to him I've now got a fantastic partner in my life and am in the process of moving in with her in Northern Ireland. My partner is also a guide dog owner but she is on her fourth dog now.
I am moving from Brighton to Belfast.
Anyway just wanted to introduce myself to you all. :)
Thanks for adding me.

Hello Dian and Thomas!

I had forgotten I even belonged to this group as it's the first time I've
received any mail from the list in probably more than a year!!!

Perhaps now some other people will wake up and say hi?

Where is everyone anyway?

Mel.

HI Mel,
yes this group seems particularly quiet. You are not the only one to say that.
Makes you wonder about the admin and whether or not they are still part of the group.
Anyway hope to speak to you soon.
Cheers for now.

Wow I thought this list was gone like this is like the first have gotten anything from this list and I'll my gosh for such a long time, I didn't think it was still up there I just kind of went poof and disappeared so hey if anybody's on here and gets messages hey start the group back up why not whatever hey sometime you need to bounce something off somebody. And speaking of that
I was in a postop to on Saturday, and was questioned by the counter person and the counter person said no dogs in here and my son who is with me said it's a service dog and she kept going on, where is the vast, where is the certification papers, you know same old rant and rave that people do that are stupid and this is in the US post office. She went to get the supervisor, the supervisor came out and looked and turnaround walked away didn't tell the counter purse to shut up and go on with your work, it wasn't even the person that was helping me that was ranting and raving Cell so I'm just passing this on to you guys because I filed a complaint with the US post office for discrimination under the ADA and I'm going to follow through with a complaint to the Department of Justice this morning go find the form and fill it out and submitted to the department of justice for discrimination under the ADA by this person and supervise at the post office that is my branch post office note let so have a good one everybody come back if you wish OK thank you I'll help with this group will give me some support another group I post another group I posted on which is a national buying group all I got was Flach and criticism that what you do wrong this and that so, I hope you get some some support here. Please excuse if my house is not punctuated correctly as I am using dictation so I don't have a keyboard is working right now so this is my only means to send a message so please forgive me

Hi Sandra!!

Long time no hear!! I saw you were tagged in some photos on Facebook from
abroad. I hope you had a lovely time.

I'm not too bad thanks. Same old S**t, different year!!! We are off down
to Sussex for a week in a couple of week's time. It will be good to get
away even if not very far!! We were booked to fly to Inverness and to
travel onto the Aisle of Skye, but I felt it was too long a journey, so we
changed our plans. I do hope to go there another time though.

How's Karen doing?

Hi Diane, Mel and all!
It's nice to see list come to life.
I don't think there is any admin moderators.

I think what may have happened is someone set-list up, and left the
door open so anyone can join, leave.

Hope you all had good summer.

Hi all,
wonder whether this group will actually come to life a bit more now. You never know it might. :)
So a little bit about myself and that is that I have a fabulous boy called Thomas who is an eight and a half year old lab retriever who is my pride and joy.
He is my first guide dog and has been and continues to be my best friend and companion.
I love him so much and he has truly changed my life for the better.
Through him I've become engaged in a lot of volunteering not only for guide dogs as a speaker, fundraising volunteer, campaigner and ambassador but also as a disability rights campaigner in Brighton. I've done a lot of work with the access advisory group for Brighton and Hove museums along with being the equalities representative on the Council's board of equalities reps.
I was up until a few weeks ago the local volunteer campaigns coordinator for the RNIB in Brighton but after not getting any support from them over the last couple of years I decided to quit and told them so in no uncertain circumstances.
As I'm now moving to Belfast I will be taking up the volunteering mantle again but this time for Guide Dogs NI, Arts Disability Forum and other opportunities I can find. :)
I like to be busy and with my boy and future dogs by my side I know we'll continue to be an unstoppable force. lol
I lost my sight totally 18 years ago due to bacterial meningitis and went from full sight to nothing in the space of 24 hours. I don't moan about it as I know there is no cure for it so I have learnt to embrace my blindness and enjoy learning how to cope with it. I still learn all the time.
Anyway all have a good time and speak soon.
Cheers

Well hello like I said my message didn't get sent all the way I am flying into London Saturday morning or afternoon or whatever the time differences exist six-inch six hours just links time from where I am to where you are so it's in the afternoon when it's morning here so at 8 AM it's 2 o'clock where I live it. So like I stated I am going on a cruise through princess cruise line going to like England, Ireland Scotland, and then on to France were a group of us are going on to Paris so it's a total of 16 days cruise and two days of touring London so.
So what I need to know is what's the weather like there was it raining by someone so I need a raincoat how cold will it be OK if you could converted to Fahrenheit that would make more sense to make side really don't understand Celsius OK
There's a total of 50 people going on this cruise 40 of them are blind or visually impaired and there'll be six or eight service animals three of those will be poodles standard poodles, and the others will be labs or I think there's maybe one Shepherd in there so looking forward to seeing England and whatever and experiencing the different countries I'm going to as this is been planned for two years so
Just a detention so just finished up going to my vet getting my last health check and getting my USDA certification health certification for my dog so it's taking a long time to get all this done and I very happy that it's finally finished so again, my name is terrie arnold and I live in Kansas City Missouri which is the center of the United States says some people refer to my area is a bellybutton of the United States so
Just talk to Tiffany doublecheck with finished

So hope to become friends with you on the list and I find out more about how guide dogs are trained in London and I can let you know about what they do here OK so hope everything goes well for everybody today and have a good one everyone

Hi,

I can't remember this list either but have a guide dog so must have joined but when, who knows.
I've just looked at the weather that's forecast for London this weekend and apart from the possibility of light showers on Sunday it looks reasonable. Forecasts are seldom reliable but the temp should be in the early to mid 70's Fahrenheit. Hope you enjoy the cruise.

Janet thank you so much for responding back to me, as having my my dog with me on the flight home seven hours maybe a long time so, so I went and purchased doggie diapers to have on so I won't have any accidents I don't want to have an accident halfway across the Atlantic ocean so really didn't think they made them but they do. So thought I was going to have to go buy baby diapers and just a dictation to figure double tap and cut a hole out of them for the tail but, you're damned expensive 12 doggie diapers for $29 I like them come in smaller packs.
So it's going to be very interesting and so thank you again so much for the weather forecast so will keep that in mind
Just talk to

So looking forward to seeing England Ireland Scotland and then going on to Paris France so, the cruises for 15 days and two days in London

Hi,
the UK has 2 main charities who provide guide dogs for visually impaired & blind people. These are pathfinders who tend to deal with just german shepherds & guide dogs for the blind who train labradors, golden retrievers, lab retrievers, german shepherds & labradoodles. In the republic of Ireland there is the Irish guide dogs for the blind.
My darling boy, Thomas, is a lab retriever & yellowish white in colour.
Hope this helps. :)

Really that use the Irish setter, as most Irish setters and I Vermette at least here in United States they're coming they're not cement really stupid dogs so I'm really surprised but hey that would be really cool to have an Irish setter as a service dog that the way cool they're beautiful dogs like grooming though that's on here so anyway that's that's that's really really cool so thanks for responding back. So hope you have a great day. Well I will be touring around to different cities in Ireland and going to Northern Island I forget where were going to do what on a tour with I'm on a cruise with Princess Cruises and so then going to Scotland then factor into going over to Paris France and then back to London flying home so it's a total of 15 days so me and my poodle are going to go see the British Isles sov it's not dictation to figure double tap when finished so this is going to be a whole new experience for my service dog as he has not gone on a cruise at all. My last dog which was a boxer had then on seven different cruises in the Caribbean so will be doing interesting so hope you all have a great day everybody and it's a chilly 65° here today the weather has dropped we've had rain and it's supposed to go back up with him to the high 80s

Can't somehow imagine Setters being guide dogs unless you want to go flying over walls etc though they are lovely dogs.
I've just looked at the London weather again and saturday looks to be very warm, in the mid 80's and there might be rain on Monday but who knows.
Hope the cruise goes well.

So anyway thank you for sending me the weather for Saturday and Sunday I'm getting into London Heathrow about 745 in the morning so leave Charlotte North Carolina it's not dictation to figure double tap when finished at 6:45 PM so will be a long flight so hopefully I can sleep most the way there I'm really hoping OK so thank you again I do appreciate it and hope to talk to all the lovely people later on here so have a good one everybody.

OK when you guys go get a new dog her first daughter whatever dog how long is your training. You go away to school to train, do they do in-home training I'm curious.
Here in United States schools do differently some schools do a two-week training and that's it some glue for weeks for the first time person getting a dog and some schools do two weeks at the school and a week at home so it all depends on where you go which school you go to because they all do different things and I think the cutting back two weeks is too, cut the cost of having somebody lied to the school and stay for two weeks with meals and all that stuff so that what you guys do at your school and I remember you saying is only two schools in England my correct so here there are 15
There is even a school that is just for kids from ages 11 to age is 17, plus there's all the other schools for PS T from soldiers going off to war and now the drama and there's wheelchairs schools were trains dogs for wheelchairs, seizures epilepsy it there blood sugar drops so there's a widePlus there's also schools for people that have autism and so wide variety of schools to train dogs not just for the blind so hey I hope y'all have a good one I'm just trying to figure out what not to pack and what to pack and all that fun stuff you just want to pack too much because I always do so have a good one everybody and have a wonderful pussy is probably evening there now Plus there's also schools for people that have autism and so wide variety of schools to train dogs not just for the blind so hey I hope y'all have a good one I'm just trying to figure out what not to pack and what to pack and all that fun stuff you just want to pack too much because I always do so have a good one everybody have a wonderful pussy is probably evening there now so

Just belatedly going through my emails, so not sure if anyone else has
already answered your questions.

We only have one main guide dog school here in the UK, although there are a
couple of very small ones, about which I know very little. The main one
offers various forms of training, depending on the client's needs. Some
people are trained at home, while others in hotels. The training centres
were mostly sold off as they were apparently not the most cost-effective way
of doing things. Training in the hotels is usually 12 days, followed by
more training at home, but really, there is no set limit, it takes as long
as it takes really!! Well, within say a month or something till
qualification. I trained with my most recent dog at a hotel in 2009 and
qualified after 10 days.

So really looking forward to it so that the one place I really looking forward to is going to the Guinness brewery in Dublin so that's going to be very interesting as I saw a video tour of the Guinness brewery and then I'm going to some whiskey distillery in Scotland, and going to Loch Ness, and having a high key so at some castle in Scotland somewhere, so it'll be very interesting and by the end of all this I'll be very very tired

Hi Terry,
they only use labradors, golden retrievers, labradoodles, german shepherds and the lab retrievers. They have experimented with all sorts of different breeds and have found these are the best when it comes to stamina and intelligence.
Mel, we have more than one guide dog school in the Uk but they have ben rebranded into regional training centres. So for example where I currently live in Brighton our regional training centre is Maidstone in Kent. They cover Kent, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove. We do have an outreach office in Brighton where 2 GDMI's are based so as to cover a wider area across Sussex.
Reading for example will cover West Sussex and Surrey. Of course London has to be different and be a whole centre on their own. :)
We have the national breeding centre based in Lemmington Spa where all our dogs are bred and born although saying that there are some brood bitches who do give birth at home.
Scotland have their own training centres like Atherton and Forfar and Northern Ireland is now catching up with their own training centre in Belfast.
With all this in mind they do train at home if the client requests it or it is half hotel and half house training. The nice thing about Guide Dogs here in the Uk is that you are totally supported no matter what the problem or age of the dog.
Terry keep in mind that Northern Ireland is part of the UK whereas the Republic of Ireland is a total country on it's own and it is also known as southern Ireland or Eire.
Hope that helps.

That sounds wonderful. I've just finished reading the Outlander series of
books by Diana Gabaldon, which are mostly set in Scotland, Paris and North
Carolina. I was supposed to be going to the Aisle of Skye in a couple of
weeks' time, but unfortunately due to health issues, we decided to go
somewhere closer to home. I'd love to do a tour of the Highlands though!
Have fun and let us know how it goes.

Well I don't really know, except that Guide Dogs in Northern Ireland is part
of the main school in the UK, but Southern Ireland has their own school,
which I think is called Irish Guide Dogs, although that might not be quite
right!! I don't know what breeds they use, although I know someone who had
a Goldendoodle from there, and I know someone who has a Golden Retriever, so
probably the breeds are similar to those used in the UK.

Guide Dogs in the UK mostly use Labradors, Lab crossed Golden Retrievers,
Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Labradoodles (a very few Standard
Poodles), a few Border Collies or Border Collies crossed with Golden
Retrievers. A popular cross here is also a Golden Retriever German Shepherd
mix; also Flat Coat Retrievers with Golden Retrievers. I know someone who
has a Labrador crossed with an Irish Water Spaniel. They have used a few
Leonbergers in recent years, and also Curly Coat Retrievers and those
crossed with Labs. Also a few Collie/German Shepherd mixes. Or German
Shepherds crossed with Labradors.

Maidstone is part of the Guide Dogs UK as a whole. It comprises many
regions, but the overall organisation is just the one, Guide Dogs UK, which
was formerly Guide Dogs for the Blind. I trained in Maidstone but am now
under the Central London team. But it's all the same school in that it is
one huge organisation with lots of regional teams, but it isn't at all like
the USA, because all the regional teams here follow the same principles,
have the same harness and equipment, we have to sign the same contract
whether we train in Northern Ireland or in Devon. Do you see what I mean?

The other schools, which are separate organisations are are Pathfinders
which only deal in German Shepherds - I have known the founder for many
years - and Seeing Dogs Alliance, which was a spin off from the main Guide
Dogs for the Blind Association.

Hope this makes sense. I've had guide dogs since I was 18, that's a long
way back, lol, so I do know a thing or 2 about the organisation, as it has
changed in its training methods etc quite a bit since I trained with my
first guide dog!!

Derek Hornby has had dogs even longer than I have though!!

HI Mel,
yes you got it right. southern Ireland is called the Irish Guide Dogs. Here in Belfast although they are part of the overall Guide Dogs UK family they are still considered as Guide Dogs NI. This lot like to be seperate but part of. :)
Anyway better tootle off and get sorted out for the day.

HI Mel,
that's exactly what I was trying to get across.
I have volunteered with Guide Dogs Uk for the past 7 years so also know a lot about the charity. I've bene a branch organiser, campaigner, speaker and many other things besides.
Yes, pathfinders are also a good charity training purely german shepherds and I have also heard about the seeing dog alliance. Don't see them advertising at all so not sure whether or not they are still functional.

Here in the US the schools can use and this goes from school to school, they use the Labrador flat coat or I think it's a European lab, shepherd they use the vista the, the boxer, standard poodle the loot use the Labrador golden cross, and they use a standard poodle,to stop and they also use the Doberman and they use a A's border collie I think it is but I'm not sure if you're still using those so that's basically the breeds of dogs that are used here in most schools in United States but the majority of the schools use the labs are goldens or the crosses of these two dogs. So again hope you all have a wonderful day and I go out and exercise those

Well that would make a lot of sense and make things a lot easier for my dog canes but, alas here in the United States we have I think there's 15 schools now the train Guy dogs some have residential programs where you go there and stay from two weeks to four weeks it depends if you're coming to get a new dog or if you're a retread getting on the second or third or fourth whatever dog. We have there is also at home training which it could be done by itself or they have, going to the school for a week and then follow up with at home training with the dog and those so it's her they have it where the trainer comes to your home and they do not many dogs and all so but there are three schools in California one has a branch stop in as a branch in Oregon there is a school in Texas which is just for people that live in Texas there's one school in Michigan there's a school in Ohio there is simple schools in the New York area there is a school in New Jersey there is one and two in Florida I'm sorry there are two in Florida and one of those is just dealing with children from age 11 to 16 stop plus there are multiple schools that I don't know where they're at that they change train dogs for multiple disabilities i.e. seizure PS TD, epilepsy, diabetes, people in wheelchairs, people that use a dog for support and walking, and probably others that I don't know about so thought I just passed this along to you also take everybody

well the thing about the USA is that you guys are huge in size in comparison to the UK. Also you have a strange setup where each state has it's own legislations and laws and then you have the federal set up too. So it must be pretty confusing for you all when you are trying to figure out what is what regarding guide dog centres across the country.
Here in the UK we basically have 4 countries within one united area namely that of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each country has it's own legilsations and laws but there are many of the laws which extend across the entire UK. We do have counties like Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Fife, Aberdeenshire etc and they all have their own local authorities like city councils, regional councils etc but Guide Dogs Uk works across all these boundaries within each of their regional teams.
We couldn't be more thankful for such a fantastic charity and all the hard work it does even more so now that it has taken under the Guide Dogs uk umbrella that of the young people and children's charity. With all this in mind Guide Dogs ar now doing buddy dogs for young children and teenagers to get them used to looking after a dog along with the family knowing what needs the dog requires and how it goes about doing that.
We also provide a service called my guide where we train up sighted volunteers to be sighted guides to take isolated visually impaired and blind people out and back into their local communities. This is also aimed at VI's who are not secure in their rehab with their canes and need support with them.
Along with all of this the charity campaigns, fundraises and pushes forward the name of guide dogs to the wider market place.
We as guide dog owners are ambassadors for the charity every time we step out of that front door whether we are doing something and therefore wearing their branded clothing or whether we are just going down to the shops on an errand.

And it will having a cited guide volunteer for people those mobility is not well well that's a wonderful thing and that is something that could be put here in United States through various groups like we have the Lions here which is there headquartered in Illinois this could be something that could be done as a volunteer thing in each chapter so I'm gonna look into this and see about passing this idea long because that would be a great service to some blind people that don't just talk to have a great mobility so that is a wonderful wonderful idea but here in
In the United States we have a national law which is Americans are disability at which covers the rights and regulations of service dogs this proceeds any other long in the country and all the states counties cities county governments follow this law so it is a national law where covers where are service dogs can go what you can ask
Just talk to Tatian all they can ask when you go into a restaurant hospital store or whatever I'll be can ask, by law is is that a service dog, and what does it do for you, but most saying it's a service dog is all that really is ask. But I don't know if in England you have this problem people passing off pants as a service dog. The fake service dogs hearing they try to pass off at dogs as service dogs and because the businesses are free to Skoff the people because they can say it's a service dog a lot of pet animals are being pretrade as service animals. And people go on the Internet and buy fake service dog cards placards vest what have you, there is no national certification documentation for service dogs. And the business case are Freda being sued for discrimination so they let the yuppie little ankle biter's in as service dogs.
So having a national certification for a service dog as a tag on the dog, but the schools that do do service dogs duke issue a photo ID with the trainer not the trainer the handler and the dog together and it's a and a just it is a photo ID which I carry with me all the time I'm not required to show this to anybody but I do have it and the only time I have had to show it that was to a police officer did not follow the ADA laws and was going along with the restaurant owner.
This was a Chinese restaurant, which is the worst of all places in United States where you get the most hassles of having a dog and restaurant is a Chinese restaurant so anyways

Hi Mel,

I went on a Baltic cruise. We called at places like Copenhagen, Stockholm,
Finland, St. Petersburg Bruges Poland. The weather was really good too as
sometimes it can be a bit cold so we took jumpers and trousers along with
our shorts as we really didn't know what it was going to be like! it turned
out to be quite hot! it was up in the mid 70s. I think when we were in St.
Petersburg it was 27 Celsius. They said in Russia that it had been
extremely hot! so we must have took the sunshine with us LOL.

Now we're back to normal rain.

I hope you enjoy your trip away as well.

take care,

No one seems to know who runs this group, and Mel and I have been on here a
few years. It was busy once but then went quiet.

Hi all,
wonder whether this group will actually come to life a bit more now. You
never know it might. :)
So a little bit about myself and that is that I have a fabulous boy called
Thomas who is an eight and a half year old lab retriever who is my pride and
joy.
He is my first guide dog and has been and continues to be my best friend and
companion.
I love him so much and he has truly changed my life for the better.
Through him I've become engaged in a lot of volunteering not only for guide
dogs as a speaker, fundraising volunteer, campaigner and ambassador but
also as a disability rights campaigner in Brighton. I've done a lot of work
with the access advisory group for Brighton and Hove museums along with
being the equalities representative on the Council's board of equalities
reps.
I was up until a few weeks ago the local volunteer campaigns coordinator for
the RNIB in Brighton but after not getting any support from them over the
last couple of years I decided to quit and told them so in no uncertain
circumstances.
As I'm now moving to Belfast I will be taking up the volunteering mantle
again but this time for Guide Dogs NI, Arts Disability Forum and other
opportunities I can find. :)
I like to be busy and with my boy and future dogs by my side I know we'll
continue to be an unstoppable force. lol
I lost my sight totally 18 years ago due to bacterial meningitis and went
from full sight to nothing in the space of 24 hours. I don't moan about it
as I know there is no cure for it so I have learnt to embrace my blindness
and enjoy learning how to cope with it. I still learn all the time.
Anyway all have a good time and speak soon.
Cheers
Diane and Thomas Marks

HI Julia,
glad to hear you feel the same way about your darling girl like I do about my boy.
Yes, volunteering is my way of giving back to guide dogs for the independence and freedom they have given me through my boy. I know what you mean about this group. It does seem to be dead doesn't it?
Whereabouts are you based?
We are truly looking forward to the move to Belfast now as my partner and I have finally found a lovely little house in Belfast. I'm sure you are aware of the religious divides here in Belfast so the area we have landed up in is a very protestant area but as my partner and I aren't either protestant or catholic it doesn't make any diference to us. Unfortunately it does to some of our friends so we may not see some of them as they may not want to come to the area.
Anyway good to hear from you.
kind regards
Diane and Thomas Marks

Hi Terry,
they only use labradors, golden retrievers, labradoodles, german shepherds
and the lab retrievers. They have experimented with all sorts of different
breeds and have found these are the best when it comes to stamina and
intelligence.
Mel, we have more than one guide dog school in the Uk but they have ben
rebranded into regional training centres. So for example where I currently
live in Brighton our regional training centre is Maidstone in Kent. They
cover Kent, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove. We do have an outreach
office in Brighton where 2 GDMI's are based so as to cover a wider area
across Sussex.
Reading for example will cover West Sussex and Surrey. Of course London has
to be different and be a whole centre on their own. :)
We have the national breeding centre based in Lemmington Spa where all our
dogs are bred and born although saying that there are some brood bitches who
do give birth at home.
Scotland have their own training centres like Atherton and Forfar and
Northern Ireland is now catching up with their own training centre in
Belfast.
With all this in mind they do train at home if the client requests it or it
is half hotel and half house training. The nice thing about Guide Dogs here
in the Uk is that you are totally supported no matter what the problem or
age of the dog.
Terry keep in mind that Northern Ireland is part of the UK whereas the
Republic of Ireland is a total country on it's own and it is also known as
southern Ireland or Eire.
Hope that helps.

I've not tried using dictation on my smartphone, I should try it sometime
and see what happens!! Well, I'd love a Border Collie as a guide, but pigs
will fly first!!

Really that use the Irish setter, as most Irish setters and I Vermette at
least here in United States they're coming they're not cement really stupid
dogs so I'm really surprised but hey that would be really cool to have an
Irish setter as a service dog that the way cool they're beautiful dogs like
grooming though that's on here so anyway that's that's that's really really
cool so thanks for responding back. So hope you have a great day. Well I
will be touring around to different cities in Ireland and going to Northern
Island I forget where were going to do what on a tour with I'm on a cruise
with Princess Cruises and so then going to Scotland then factor into going
over to Paris France and then back to London flying home so it's a total of
15 days so me and my poodle are going to go see the British Isles sov it's
not dictation to figure double tap when finished so this is going to be a
whole new experience for my service dog as he has not gone on a cruise at
all. My last dog which was a boxer had then on seven different cruises in
the Caribbean so will be doing interesting so hope you all have a great day
everybody and it's a chilly 65° here today the weather has dropped we've had
rain and it's supposed to go back up with him to the high 80s

I've neverheard of Irish Setters being used as guide dogs!! But they do
cross Irish Water Spaniels with Spinones in the UK, though very few of them.

Terrie and all,

Can't somehow imagine Setters being guide dogs unless you want to go flying
over walls etc though they are lovely dogs.
I've just looked at the London weather again and saturday looks to be very
warm, in the mid 80's and there might be rain on Monday but who knows.
Hope the cruise goes well.

Yes, I do know about the religious situation in Belfast, my own view is live
and let live, but as you say some dont see it that way. And yes thats why I
volunteer for guide dogs too, its my way of giving back what they've given
to me, and I tell them at every opportunity too. I'm doing a collection
tomorrow which is always fun. I'm in Cambridgeshire.

This is an experime nt that is no longer done as they cannot guarantee that they will get the right mix of stamina and intelligence.

Cambridgeshire hey? :) I used to know it well when I was sighted and working in a pub in Huntingdon. I used to spend many lovely days in Cambridge punting and just strolling around the city. Mind you, as a blind person with a guide dog now I think I'd find it a bit hair raising with all the bicycles around. It's bad enough we have huge problems in Brighton with cyclists who have absolutely no consideration for anybody or even the rules of the road.
We have almost been run into a few times when we were crossing on a green man and a cyclist has attempted to cross a red light. I think it's possibly one of the smaller reasons as to why I want to move away from Brighton to Belfast . I want to move in with my partner which is the biggest reason why I am moving away from Brighton but also Belfast, although being 30 years behind, is still a lovely city as people are so warm, friendly and very much aware when it comes to guide dogs. They couldn't do more to help.
Anyway we are fundraising today at Castle Espie so have to be up early as my partner is the branch organiser for Belfast Central branch and we have to go with the trading secretary to set up and meet the event organisers.
Anyway enjoy and will speak soon.

Nobody runs this group.
It's not a moderated group.

Well it won't work for a DBC that's for sure.

Aah, right, though you still see them in the abbreviations list in Forward.
Shame as I'm told they are a very attractive crossbreed.

Oooh I know, Cambridge can be a night mare for a guide dog handler though I
worked my first dog there many times, but there has been many changes now,
and not for the better, it really is a ruined city now. The city cnetre is
mostly pedestiran now I think, I dont go to the city much now but my family
still live in the area and I visit often, and work Wren around the
villages. And I know all about cyclists, I was walking thru a subway a
couple of years ago and one came flying through and nearly ran in to us, he
lost control and crashed in to a bush!! Served him right really, but ooh he
was so apologetic, and I did make sure he was OK!! When I was training one
shot past us at high speed and Wren almost had heart failure!! It frightened
the life out of her. I visited Belfast a few years back while working, I
didnt have Wren then and I must say it was one of the oddest experiences I
ever had, because of all the troubles I grew up hearing about, bombs and so
on, and here was me able to walk thru the city in safety!! I hope you and
Thomas will be very happy and do keep us posted as to how you settle in,
wont you? I was fundraising for guide dogs today, I always enjoy it and my
husband likes to go with me as he enjoys it too and we have a good laugh at
times, but people were so generous, lovely people, most wanting to tell me
all about their own dogs too, and Wren gets lots of cuddles which she loves.
We had a very successful day I think. Wren and I did a 2 hour shift, but
there was a rota of us there from 9 till 4.

HI julia,
yes it is a huge misconception about Northern Ireland. Yes they have had their troubles but the people here couldn't be more fantastic and so friendly and wanting to help.
We too were fundraising for guide dogs at Castle Espie yesterday and it was a really lovely day. We had, at one stage, 5 guide dogs all being petted and loved by the public and small kids. Thomas being the snob that he is just ignored the kids.
hahahah OH yes my partner has just rminded me that we had 5 guide dogs and 3 pups in training at one stage. It was amazing and they really drew in the punters. :)
It wasn't the warmest of days but when the sunshine did eventually make it's appearance it was warm.
I love doing the events as a volunteer as I've had my fill of organising a branch and trying to get things in place for other volunteers. Thomas and I did it for 6 and a half years and the stress did eventually tell on me. My partner is the branch organiser for Belfast Central Guide Dogs branch so I hope I support her in organising events and getting guide dogs here to pull their fingers out and get us drivers etc. The politics wherever you are regarding guide dogs is always the same and there's always a fight on your hands to get the necessary equipment to undertake an event. This is why I am so glad now I am only a general volunteer and guide dog owner. :)
Thomas has also been startled when training by cyclists but he tends to take it all in his stride.
Hoe you have a good relaxing sunday.
Cheers for now.
