There is one group, all they do is post the rules for the group.  For me it is a real farce because nothing else ever gets posted.

Hi everybody,

OK well it seems that there are a few of us here.  Let's see if we can
get some discussion started.

Where are you all from?  I'm in the UK.

Are you all guide dog owners?  I had 4 excellent dogs over a period of
30 years, but I'm without a dog at the moment after a couple off
failures with new
dogs.

How have people found recent training experiences?  How have people
found training at home compared with training in hotels or guide dog
centres?  How
has training changed?

Anybody any thoughts?

Hi chris. What part of the uk r u from? I’m from ireland and i am a guide dog owner. She is my first dog so i can’t say whether or not training has changed really. I’ve had her 6 years. She’s 8 and a half now. She has slowed down a bit but still working pretty well

Hi Pam,

I live in Worcestershire, about 30 miles south of Birmingham and 50
miles north of Bristol.  Whereabouts in Ireland are you?

I've been to Ireland a few tines.  I must say that I really like the
bleeping road crossings you have in Ireland.  The fact that the boxes
with the buttons on bleep every couple of seconds even when not in use
makes it so much easier to find the crossing and the button.

How did you train with your dog?  Was it at home, or did you have
residential training?  How long was the training?

Hi Sandra, and all the other members.

I am a new member to this list.

My name is Dave, and i am from Manchester, in the North-West of england.

I currently have a black Lab, called Joann.

She is 10 years old, and was retired, earlier this year.

I am still considering, weather or not, to put in for a new Dog, as there as
been quite a few changes, over recent years.

All the best,

Dave.

Hi chris. I wonder if we know some of the same people then. I know a few from the uk. A couple from Hereford. I am from co. Clare. What parts of ireland have u been to? My training was 3 weeks residential and then a week back in my own area. How about yours?

Hi Dave,

Nice to meet you here. it depends on how you would feel about not having another dog.

I am waiting for my sixth dog and I can tell you I can’t wait. I got my first ever guide dog in 1985 I hate being without a dog.

I have heard that this new way of training is quite good.

I do hope you change your mind.

Take care,

sandra.

Hi,

I have never been to Ireland but you never know I might go there some day. Funny though it maybe but I love going on cruises. I don’t take my dogs with me though but I know some people do.

Did you say that you went to Hereford? I didn’t go but my hubby did for about a year.

Hi Pam and all

I've trained both residentially in guide dog centres and hotels and I've
also trained from home.  As it happens, the 4 dogs I trained with
residentially were all successful and the two dogs I trained with at
home were both unsuccessful.  I'm not saying that where I trained was
the main reason for success or failure, but on balance I do think there
are advantages to residential training. It's certainly advantageous for
someone new to guide dogs to have residential training and be able to
meet and talk over problems with more experienced dog owners.  I also
think that the residential setting is a better learning environment for
both the dog and their owner as opposed to the chaotic home environment
with all its distractions.

Pam - I'll write to you privately about possible mutual acquaintances.
I've been to Co. Clare a couple of times and stayed in Doolin, attracted
by the music and Guinness in O'Connor's pub of course.  I've also
visited Wexford, Wicklow and Kilkenny and even went to the fleadh in
Drogheda this year, which was an experience.
