Sweetland provides support for all international and multilingual undergraduate students who are making the transition into the U-M community. Writing 120 is intended for all students who feel most comfortable with academic writing in a language other than English. This course is designed to help students develop their general and academic writing abilities in English. Students will develop written fluency and improve command over grammatical and rhetorical conventions common in a variety of academic disciplines with the aim of developing a rhetorical perspective on multilingualism as it relates to academic writing.

This course is designed for international and multilingual students to practice English academic and professional writing in a supportive environment. This course runs on a discussion and workshop format, in which students explore the rhetorical effectiveness of stylistic elements commonly found in American academic and professional writing. To achieve this goal, students will participate in an online core grammar program, practice fundamental editing strategies, read exemplary essays and discuss their stylistic features. In each class, students will work individually on editing exercises and collaboratively in stylistic discussions. Students will have a chance to bring their own essays and editing questions to workshops with their classmates and the instructor. Additionally, students will identify and practice styles of writing in different contexts, such as writing in science, business, and psychology.

Speaking includes, but it is not limited to, pronunciation. Everyone has a unique way of speaking, and the crucial task is to make oneself easily understood by others. Too often language learners become so worried about how their speech is perceived that they dare not speak up in public. This may put you at a particularly disadvantage when verbal participation is expected or evaluated in your classes.

The continuous work on the four main areas under study ( grammar, vocabulary, communicative functionas and linguistics skills) will follow the contents of themanual's first five units ( Face2face Advanced).

It is of paramount importance taht students attend classesregularly. Continuous work with the textbook's materials, bothduring class-time and as homework tasks, will help students improvetheir use of English.

To evaluate the exercises/essays, oral presentations, etc., thestudents will be informed of deadlines to hand in the exercisesand/or essays established at the beginning of the semester.Similarly, the days for the oral presentations will be provided bythe teacher. These exercises and/or essays will be evaluated onlyif they are handed in before the established deadlines. In the caseof the oral presentations, they will only be evaluated if done onthe established date(s) (during the semester).

Erasmus students will have the same deadlines as non-Erasmusstudents regarding essays or oral presentations. They will also sitthe exam on the official date (or in the alternative date, if theymeet the established requirements regarding the clash of two examson the same day, following the legislation in the University).

Students will come to know basic instruments (grammar books, dictionaries and corpora) and basic translation methodology and strategies (analysis of a source text and its transposition into a target text). They will also be able to apply instruments and strategies while translating a variety of simple texts from and into Russian. They will finally be able to identify and use the translation strategies that are most useful for the communicative functions of the texts to be translated.

The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic theoretical and practical tools for translation from Russian into Italian. The topics covered in the Russian texts (levels A2-B1) will be of general culture and will cover geography, tourism, holidays, national cuisine, mass-media and history. Particular attention will be paid to the linguistic analysis of the source text, thus consolidating the grammatical knowledge acquired, and its communicative function, in order to develop a specific translation project that provides the most appropriate translation strategies. The main theoretical and translation problems will also be presented with the help of examples.

The lessons, which require 70% attendance, will be of the seminar type, but will also include some moments of frontal lesson dedicated to the theoretical and methodological aspects of translation. In the discussion phases, the active participation of all students is required. You will be asked to deliver some work done at home, on which you will be given individual feedback. Exercises are planned using only the monolingual dictionary to develop the ability to identify the translation equivalents.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend the online Modules 1, 2 on Health and Safety [ -and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas].
