Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines is a 2012 American horror film and the fifth installment in the Wrong Turn film series. It is a sequel to Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011) and follows a group of college students who are hunted by a family of cannibalistic hillbillies during a Halloween festival in a small town in West Virginia. The film was directed by Declan O'Brien, who also wrote the screenplay and composed the music. The film stars Camilla Arfwedson, Roxanne McKee, Doug Bradley, Simon Ginty, Oliver Hoare, Amy Lennox, Paul Luebke, and Duncan Wisbey.

The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 23, 2012. It received mostly negative reviews from critics and fans of the series, who criticized the plot, characters, acting, gore, and lack of originality. However, some praised the film for its entertainment value, humor, and atmosphere. The film has a rating of 4.2 out of 10 on IMDb and 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Plot Summary

The film begins with a prologue set in 2003, where three escaped convicts are chased by police officers in the woods. They encounter Three Finger (Borislav Iliev), who kills them and takes their car. He then picks up his brothers Saw Tooth (George Karlukovski) and One Eye (Radoslav Parvanov) and drives to the town of Fairlake, West Virginia.

In the present day, a group of college students - Billy (Simon Ginty), Cruz (Amy Lennox), Julian (Oliver Hoare), Lita (Roxanne McKee), and Gus (Paul Luebke) - are on their way to Fairlake to attend the Mountain Man Festival, a Halloween event where people dress up as various horror characters. Along the way, they almost hit Maynard Odets (Doug Bradley), an old man who is actually the leader of the cannibal family. They take him to the police station, where Sheriff Angela Carter (Camilla Arfwedson) arrests him for trespassing. She also warns the students to be careful during the festival, as there have been reports of missing people in the area.

That night, the students check into a motel run by Mose (Duncan Wisbey), who tells them stories about the cannibal family and their origins. Meanwhile, Three Finger, Saw Tooth, and One Eye arrive in town and free Maynard from his cell. They then proceed to kill anyone who crosses their path, including Mose, Deputy Biggs (Kyle Redmond-Jones), Deputy Lane (Peter Brooke), and several festival goers. They also capture Billy and Julian and torture them in their truck.

The next morning, Sheriff Carter discovers the carnage and tries to contact the state police for backup. However, she finds out that the phone lines have been cut and the roads have been blocked by the cannibals. She decides to arm herself and rescue the survivors with the help of Deputy Lita (Finn Jones), who is secretly in love with her. They manage to find Cruz and Gus at the motel, but Gus is killed by Saw Tooth while trying to escape. They also encounter Maynard, who reveals that he is the father of the cannibals and that he has been breeding them for generations. He taunts them with his twisted philosophy and warns them that they will never leave alive.

Sheriff Carter, Lita, and Cruz then head to the power plant, where they hope to restore electricity and call for help. However, they are ambushed by Three Finger and One Eye, who kill Lita and injure Cruz. Sheriff Carter fights back and kills One Eye with a shotgun blast to his head. She then runs into Billy and Julian, who have escaped from their captors. They join forces and try to reach the town hall, where they hope to find a radio.

However, they are intercepted by Maynard and Saw Tooth, who have rigged the town hall with explosives. Maynard shoots Julian in the chest and reveals that he plans to blow up the town and everyone in it as a revenge for his family's persecution. He also reveals that he has another son named Danny (Harry Anichkin), who is disguised as one of the festival goers. Danny then appears behind Sheriff Carter and stabs her in the back. Billy tries to save her, but he is shot by Maynard. Cruz, who has survived her wounds, grabs a gun and shoots Danny in the head. She then confronts Maynard, who mocks her for being the last survivor. She shoots him in the chest, but he survives and laughs maniacally. He then presses a detonator, causing the town hall to explode.

The film ends with a scene of the burning town, where the bodies of the victims are shown. A voice-over by Maynard says that his family will never die and that they will always be hungry for more.

Review

Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines is a disappointing entry in the Wrong Turn franchise, which started off as a decent horror film in 2003 and gradually declined in quality and originality. The film suffers from a weak plot, poor acting, unlikable characters, excessive gore, and a lack of suspense and scares. The film also fails to deliver on its premise of a Halloween festival, as most of the scenes take place in dark and deserted locations. The film does not offer anything new or interesting to the genre, and instead relies on clichés and stereotypes.

The film's only redeeming qualities are its entertainment value, humor, and atmosphere. The film does not take itself too seriously and has some moments of dark comedy and absurdity. The film also has a decent production value and creates a creepy and gloomy mood with its setting and music. The film may appeal to fans of gore and splatter, as it features some graphic and brutal deaths and injuries. However, these scenes are also over-the-top and unrealistic, and may disgust or bore some viewers.

Overall, Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines is a mediocre horror film that does not live up to its potential. It is not recommended for anyone who is looking for a quality or original horror film, or anyone who is easily offended or disturbed by violence and gore. It is only suitable for fans of the series or hardcore horror enthusiasts who enjoy mindless and bloody entertainment.
