The increasing demand for stringent fire and explosion protection in hazardous areas within the mining industry has led to specialist manufacturer and designer of diesel engine flameproof systems, Elgin Flameproofing, launching a new model tractor for underground coal mining applications.

Newly appointed MD Peet Hartman says that its equipment is not new to the industry but the need for stricter compliance within the extremely hazardous explosive conditions has necessitated an investment by the company to redesign and upgrade its tractor and all its systems.

The new underground, flameproof tractor is manufactured locally to suit conditions prevalent in southern African coal mines where methane gas and coal dust is prevalent and has all of the relevant approved and certified documentation.

The design team is headed up by Gary Huxham, who has been instrumental in introducing a very comprehensive range of diesel engine flameproof engines and systems as well as the underground flameproof tow tractors.

Huxham and the Elgin team are renowned in the flameproofing industry for introducing reliable equipment used in critical safety areas throughout a broad spectrum of applications with a focus on mining and surface petrochemical industries.

These have been developed over the years to the current models, which now have proven six-cylinder engines, power-shift transmissions and constant 44 drives used in low and high seam coal mining applications.

The front and rear assemblies are common on all models. All the major drive line sub assembly components are approved by the OEM which are suitable for the hazardous operating conditions where these tractors operate.

Elgin is currently in the final stages of developing, fitting and testing an integrated proximity detection system (PDS) that is designed to detect mine workers or equipment that may be in the immediate vicinity during operation.

The crash occurred at approximately 7 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of IL Route 25 and Kenyon Road, officials said. According to police, the male driver of the Mack semi-tractor trailer was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Two females who were inside the Honda Civic were transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, officials said. According to Bartlett police, one of the victims later succumbed to her injuries.

A press release from the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Department stated that crews needed to removed the roof to the Honda Civic in order to gain access to the car's four occupants, all of whom were South Elgin High School students.

Photos and video from the scene earlier this morning showed a heavy police and emergency presence from Elgin, Fox River, Geneva, Carol Stream, St. Charles and more, along with roads closed and traffic backed up as officials worked to investigate.

School District U-46 Crisis Team has been activated at South Elgin High School, and the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team is assisting Bartlett Police Department with the investigation, the release said.

"It is with a heavy heart that we write about a loss in our South Elgin High School family," a statement from School District U-46 read. "Four South Elgin High School students were involved in a car accident this morning. According to our law enforcement, two of the students lost their lives, and one of the other students is in critical condition and is being treated at an area hospital, and the fourth student received non-life-threatening injuries."

Robert was affectionately known as Bob or Bobby C. by his family and friends. Bob was born November 7, 1946 to Howard (E.H.) and Helen (Symanoski) Christensen. He spent the majority of his life on the family farm west of Raleigh, ND. He attended Raleigh Grade School and graduated from Flasher High School in 1964. Bob went on to begin his farming career with his brother Brian. He truly enjoyed working and living on the farm. Bob loved animals, especially his last dog, Ginger, who was his special companion for many years. He retired in 2010 and moved to Elgin, ND. Until his health made it impossible for him to travel, he enjoyed spending his winters in Mesa, AZ. There, he quickly made new friends with not only his neighbors, but all the dogs as well. He would ride his scooter down the streets and hand out doggy treats to all the neighborhood dogs.

Family was very important to Bob as he took great pride in his nieces and nephews and their accomplishments. He was a kind and gentle man who loved children and always seemed to have a piece of candy or chewing gum for all those he met.

Bob had many interests. He had a large gun collection, an antique tractor collection and dabbled as well in coins. He also enjoyed a good pinochle and whist game. He was a member of the Raleigh Rod and Gun Club for many years and was a current member of the Dogtooth Antique Tractor Club. For many years he drove a tractor in the Raleigh tractor trek. Hunting, and especially fishing, were a big part of his life, never passing up an opportunity to buy another fishing pole and more tackle. His attraction to water and fishing can be attributed to growing up a stone's throw from the Raleigh Reservoir. Although he loved to hunt and fish, his true love was his beloved Minnesota Vikings. Regardless of the number of times they let him down, he was always ready and upbeat for the next game. Skol Vikings!

The Farm Safety Foundation, an independent charity that works closely with industry partners to engage, educate, and communicate strong farm safety messages, were delighted to receive half of the funds raised.
