Hi there
Alan do you know what this one is please?  I’ve been wondering for ages & seeing Mike’s query reminded me!
Thanks
Vanessa

Dear Vanessa,

I thought this might be a Hawk-moth of some sort, but it turned out to be an Angle Shades moth, which I have to say I’m not familiar with. I’m not any sort of expert on identifying Lepidoptera (or any other fauna & flora!), but I tracked it down, rather randomly, on http://ukmoths.org.uk/top20.php), courtesy of Google.

As I suggested to Mike, it’s worth submitting a record to GBRC, if you know the date you saw it.

Best wishes,

Alan

Hi all, not quite sure how / why I got this email, but Yes it is an Angle Shades, beautiful, in future, if anyone is stuck on  moths, in real difficulty, Rich and Margaret Austin are THE people, Jaimie hooper is always available,
and there are quite a few entomologists out there , I have a love of nature, but no expert, as the advert says, if I don't know, I know a person that does, so NEVER be scared of asking, PLEASE

Thanks Alan & Vic
I had tried to identify in various books but failed! So much appreciated.
I will have the date recorded on the photograph so very happy to submit to GBRC but I’ve never done so before.  How do you do this? By email?  And do they require date/location/photo?  It would be good to know for the future & to pass on to other people.

Vic - this is the old GCAN communication email.

Thanks again for your time
Vanessa

Dear Vanessa,

Submitting a record is very easy, provided you have internet access.

1. go to http://www.biologicalrecordscentre.gov.gg/

2. click on “Submit a record” (3rd subject in index)

3. click on and move map pointer to location of specimen seen (and use tools to enlarge/pan across map, and change to satellite image)

4. complete information required

5. click on “send”
