"The Happening" is a 1967 song recorded by Motown artists The Supremes. It served as the theme song of the 1967 Columbia Pictures film The Happening, and was released as a single by Motown at the time of the film's release that spring. While the movie flopped, the song peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in May,[1] becoming The Supremes' tenth number 1 single in the United States,[2] peaking in the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart at number 6, and in the top 5 in the Australian Pop Chart and in the Dutch Pop Chart.
It has been widely believed, and reported[3][4] that the instrumental track was recorded in Los Angeles using members of the Wrecking Crew, particularly drummer Hal Blaine. The song was authored by Los Angeles-based writer Frank DeVol, and sessions for the single were cut in a Los Angeles studio. Two reports suggest all or part of the final released single was recorded in Detroit. Supremes biographer Mark Ribowsky wrote in 2008 that "early tracks [were laid down] in L.A." but "couldn't catch the groove . . .needing a stronger, funkier bottom and backbeat." Ribowsky maintains that "they started all over again in Studio A in March [1967]."[5] However, Chris Jisi, writing in 2009, notes the track was cut in Los Angeles but was sent back to re-record the bass line with Motown regular James Jamerson, and the final version contained at minimum his contribution.[5][6]
Ballard's final of the 17 appearances The Supremes made on the hit CBS variety television program The Ed Sullivan Show[7] was on an episode where she performed this song live from Expo 67 in Montréal on Sunday, May 7, 1967,[8] going to number 1 the same week.
The selection's lyrics do not specify exactly what "the happening" is, although the implication is the singer has been abandoned in a love relationship. The singer says she was "sure, I felt secure" and "I was riding high on top of the world". But something happens that is negative and it leaves the individual narrating the selection in worse shape, than before it "just happened".
To me it almost sounds like the audio equivalent of a film burning up. Im guessing it has something to do with recording on tape but Im hoping someone might have a better idea on what exactly is happening.
It is normally obvious to listeners whether a human vocalization is intended to be heard as speech or song. However, the 2 signals are remarkably similar acoustically. A naturally occurring boundary case between speech and song has been discovered where a spoken phrase sounds as if it were sung when isolated and repeated. In the present study, an extensive search of audiobooks uncovered additional similar examples, which were contrasted with samples from the same corpus that do not sound like song, despite containing clear prosodic pitch contours. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we show that hearing these 2 closely matched stimuli is not associated with differences in response of early auditory areas. Rather, we find that a network of 8 regions, including the anterior superior temporal gyrus (STG) just anterior to Heschl's gyrus and the right midposterior STG, respond more strongly to speech perceived as song than to mere speech. This network overlaps a number of areas previously associated with pitch extraction and song production, confirming that phrases originally intended to be heard as speech can, under certain circumstances, be heard as song. Our results suggest that song processing compared with speech processing makes increased demands on pitch processing and auditory-motor integration.
I read some interview with Charles in which he said a spacecraft landed near his neighborhood when he was a child. Everyone gathered and went to greet them. This song is his personal reference to that experience.

There's Something Happening is most famous for its very energetic and fast-paced nature, making it be considered one of his most catchiest songs. The original version of the song, at the time, would be very notable for cutting-off and glitching during the middle of the song, originally foreshadowing its upcoming extended version. Fans would then consider the full version of said moment satisfying to first listen to on the extended version. The music video would be very synonymous with the song for its just as fast-paced nature, along with its colorful imagery and its uncanny usage of claymation. It would also be noted for its showcasing of Jack's skills in animation and editing. The song has since become very popular on the Internet, becoming popular with fan-made videos and animations, most notably with the "close up meme" that was popular around 2020-2021.
